Over due upgrade

Hi all

Just looking for some help I'm running a pc i built back in 2008 it's basically gen 1 intel i7 it can play most games and i did once upgrade it's graphic card to a 7970 but i think it's time to consider an upgrade.

I am a little out of touch is now a good time to upgrade or is something due out which i should wait a bit longer which could push prices down.

What recommendations do people have for system builds?

Hi, please give an idea of your budget and what sorts of games you play (or generally what you do on the computer where you feel it is slow).

An upgrade should be easy, and if you move fast there are some nice black Friday deals on.

I could probably go to £2,000 if it is worth it.

I play gta 5, sometimes i play ea star wars battlefront 2, World of war ships, just cause 3 also play some xbox pc beta games outer worlds etc

OK, that's a pretty decent budget. If you are running something like an i7-860 then that isn't hard to upgrade from. Ultimate gaming CPU right now is the 9900K, but that's pretty much the only Intel CPU worth having and the AMD 3900X is a better all rounder. I couldn't justify that sort of money, so went 3700X on an X470 motherboard. A quick baseline for people to poke holes in:

That leaves about £160 left for a PSU (I wouldn't re-use one from 2008 no matter how good it was) and possibly a copy of Windows, maybe a new case if you can't re-use what you have.

Now, you could get a cheaper SSD and probably not feel any difference, but I like Samsung for reliability and that one looks a decent deal. The 3900X and 2080ti are both overkill. A 3700X would save you about £245 and probably feel much the same in most games. Similarly, a 2070 Super or an AMD 5700XT would be a big upgrade for you and save a packet. In the other direction, an X570 motherboard would cost at least another £50 but would get you PCIe 4 which you might like for a bit of future proofing.

Pretty much *all* of the cpus are fine for gaming on, I'm not convinced you really can go wrong at this point.

This would be superb system for 1440p 60+ to 100+ fps gaming. A 2080 Ti right now is a bad choice (in my opinion), as Ampere (nvidia's next GPUs) are likely to release around April / May, and will bring significant performance gains to the table.

Ignore the compatability warning, it's because it's a B450 motherboard and 3rd gen Ryzen, but MSI "Max" boards come with updated BIOS out of the box to be compatible with 3rd gen.
