HTPC for 4K

So my build is:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Asus ROG Strix B450-F
Patriot Viper 16GB 3200Mhz
Crucial MX500 250GB
Gigabyte RTX 2060
Corsair TX550M

I just need to find a suitable case!

I will run Kodi DSPlayer and use MadVR for upscaling to my projector. I am updating the projector to an Epson TW9400. It should be quite an improvement (hopefully!).

MSI Mortar B450 Max has better VRMs,and better heatsinks. I would check this list for GPUs:

If you want to get an EVGA RTX2060,the RTX2060KO is the model to get as it is based off the larger TU104 die(not the TU106) and appears to have extra compute performance:

However,its not the quietest of RTX2060 cards. The GTX1650 has a weaker media decode engine based on Volta,unlike the GTX1660 series and RTX series GPUs.

The motherboard will be probably fine as its a Ryzen 5 3600 I suppose.

If you watch the GN video,they show for some reason the TU104 based RTX2060 can be upto 47% faster in some compute benchmarks.



However,it isn't the most quiet of RTX2060 GPUs and reading further into it,not all RTX2060KO cards will use the TU104,but instead the smaller TU106 which the RTX2060 is normally based on.

Looking at the price difference,I probably might just get the cheapest RTX2060 then,as for £330 to £350,I think you can get RTX2060 Super and RTX2070 GPUs.

It will be fine. If you switch on PBO to invalidate your warranty making the CPU way hotter for minimal performance gains then yeah you want a better VRM, but for sane use that board looks like it even has non fake heatsinks so should work just fine even with much higher end CPUs.

I hadn't really intended on overclocking it to be honest. I don't think I'd need the extra CPU power. The GPU is the most important part of my build as MadVR tends to use it, rather than the CPU. So I think the 3600 at stock will be more than enough.

The problem is the MSI motherboards are cheaper by £10~£20 and better. I would not buy the Asus as its too expensive for what it is. I have an Asus B450 mini-ITX motherboard myself,but they do overcharge for them(although with mini-ITX their Strix motherboards are better than most so hence why I got mine).

The heatsinks are not great as they run the second hottest partially due to a lack of finning and a large plastic shroud,with only Gigabyte being the worst.



The Asus motherboard is around £110 and the MSI Mortar Max B450 is £88 and the MSI Tomahawk B450 Max is £98. Buildzoid also looked at the VRMs and heatsinks and they were amongst the best of the B450 motherboards. OTH,the MSI X570 motherboards are ironically hit and miss and Asus is better.

I got the motherboard on an offer for £98 which I thought was reasonable. But I have to be honest, I didn't look into VRM's etc....

Well luckily its a Ryzen 5 3600,but motherboard companies are still very variable on AM4 motherboards. As I noted before the MSI X570 motherboards are worse than the Asus X570 motherboards,and the situation is reversed with the MSI X570 VRMs running hotter than than the Asus X570 VRMs.
