A little slow? It was supposed to be out months ago :D This is the second time it has been pushed back, and motherboards are supposed to be ready. If there was a problem with the silicon, that could push it back 3 months for a re-spin, but this is getting silly.
Supposedly the chips are now going into mass production. Given the usual 3 months it takes from wafer start to chips coming out, getting them to a motherboard factory and placed on boards, then those boards on a boat and into our shops we are probably looking at around May.
But if new AM4 motherboard products are turning up in summer, that implies the companies think they have a worthwhile lifespan at that point so I doubt a new socket is imminent.
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
What are the chances of the current chips working on newer motherboards and chipsets, will AM4 be compatible with AM4+, or will it be another Intel where 1151 has been around for a while but 7th gen chips dont work with the newer chipsets?

Crystal ball time; sadly mines in the wash... :(
From what happened (or didn't) at CES I've decided that it will be a screen update to a 1440p with high refresh or a 1080p high refresh ips based one and a new gpu (and i might just refresh my storage)
I am not replacing the case again (and right now there is nothing that takes my fancy, all tower or mid tower and i want cube) and the current crop of motherboards / cpu / ram and the transition to pci4 etc to me don't make it worth it; rather disappointed

So far AMD has kept compatibility, other than motherboard manufacturers cheaping out on bios chips
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Bumping this one again, thinking of getting a CPU with integrated graphics, getting rid of the RX580 while its still work something, and then just running integrated until something new comes out, only really play Fortnite and Diablo 3 and monitors 1920*1080 so dont need something that'll push 4k graphics or anythign like that...
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Ryzen 5 3400G
4 core, 8 thread
3.7Ghz to 4.2Ghz boost
11 core Vega graphics built in
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Its a zen+ part :( Was hoping it was zen2.
For no reason I decided to take plunge and got a b450m mortar from amazon for £85. They offer free £6 if you top up £80 credit on your account. A 1600 AF from eBay cclonline for £85 with nectar points. I emailed them to see whether I would get a AE and they only have AF in stock. Ram appears to been rising so I got some 3600 cl17 from OCUK for £69. It most probably won't run at full speed but it will give me something to tinker with. I have a 480 which runs at 580 speeds at 2560*1080 so a GPU would probably been a better investment but I was thinking I would need to spend £300 to get a big improvement.
Everything should be here Saturday; quite excited!
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Anything with moar cores!,
The 3770 is already 4c/8t, feel like I need more if I’m upgrading lol
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Its worth at least £100! EBay prices are crazy if its the k.
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Its the S, I had a stock 3770 in my PC and the 3770S in my server, I took the S out of the server and replaced it with an i5-3470, put the S in my machine and sold the 3770, got £60 for it on cockers, tend not to use eBay as theres just so many wasters and scammers its not worth it..
I'll be selling the 3770S, 16Gb RAM (4x8Gb) and my Asus ROG mATX Board, Gene V or IV, something like that, also got a Surface Pro 2017, HP DL360e, Dell Inspiron One, GT1030, R9-270X, R9-290 and the RX580 to sell, should about cover me enough for a new board chip and RAM..
I am also looking at Bose 700's for airplane travel though for work so thats a decent chunk of anything I get..
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
The 3400 seems quite poor value for money.
You can get a Ryzen 1200 for £60: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Process...dp/B0741DN383/
and not sell a graphics card sounds a better bet.
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
The one to get right now is the Ryzen 1600, with part number YD1600BBAFBOX (note AF in the model number, not AE)
This is basically a Ryzen 2600, Zen+ architecture, 6 core / 12 thread. Costs about £90-100 online, and is going to phase out the AE variant in time.
A few places stocking them:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-CPU-RYZ.../dp/B07XTQZJ28
https://www.alza.co.uk/amd-ryzen-5-1...utAutoChange=1
https://www.technoworld.com/amd-ryze...-yd1600bbafbox
https://www.alternate.co.uk/AMD/YD16...M4/AMD/1610416
CCL's listing states both product codes, so check over the phone if they're shipping the AF version before ordering. They seems to have the best price for a major retailer though:

Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
Added the 1600 to my watch list, still not 100% sure what board tbh, needs to be something that'll comfortably take a top of the range CPU so next upgrade will be a simple CPU swap..
Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!
The 1600af I got is from cclonline eBay shop.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Ryzen...72.m2749.l2649
Its 93.52. Paydayjan code takes 10% off making it just under £85.
AFAIK they are not doing anything on 14nm anymore and due to the 1600 popularity they wanted to keep the SKU. They are lower binned 2600 seems to be the consensus.

Back to this one, ATX for the Mortar Max?
Going to look at the Asrock website and compare the boards on there, see what the difference is between the SL and Pro4..
Ok, so audio is better on the SL, and it’s got a higher choke, whatever that is..

TLDR: both boards are rated for 3950X, I wouldn't worry about it.
Part of the CPU voltage regulators that smooth current flow. One board has 6 phase of 60A, the other has 9 phases of 42A so actually the one with the lower inductor rating still wins because it is sharing the load across more phases (and so probably runs a bit cooler). But overall, I wouldn't read too much into it unless you are into overclocking in which case the one with more phases is better.
