I think the Steel Legend is a better board anyway, it's very feature packed. Something like 5 fan headers on it - very useful!

Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!

The heatsink on the steel legend is too small. There is review on YouTube somewhere. Hardware unboxed i think. Probably fine for low tdp CPUs though.

I got the mortar max from amazon mainly due to them giving £6 free on credit topup, there are some oc options missing, the fan headers are in odd places, it takes ages to post but it works okay. It didn't come with its m.2 screw and after trying to contact msi support i have decided they are god awful.

I last had a MSI mobo in about 2005 and prefer my last one from asrock although this might be a familiarity thing.

Edi: mortar max is £85.50 at cclonline eBay store. Tomahawk should be £95.

88 quid at ebuyer with NDD too.

And yeah, for a B450M board you can't go wrong. Yes i'm biased.

Got mine from ocuk - all bits included. MSI have been on top of the Bios updates for it too.
Grab that. Get that. Check it out. Bring that here. Grab anything useful. Take anything good.

Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!

Hardware Unboxed seemed to favour the ASrock boards....this is referring to the Pro 4, which I believe has a 3 phase VRM, this is beefed up to a 4 phase on the Steel Legend. Note at the time of the video the Steel Legend wasn't released, it come in early 2019, so wasn't included in the lineup, but is considered higher end than the Pro4.

I think they're also supposed to be decent. I went with Buildzoids analysis of boards for Gamersnexus - he seemed to rue the fact that you couldn't get the Mortar Max in North America.

Edit: At the time of that video I don't think the the Mortar, let alone the Mortar Max, had been released. Mind you that's not to say they wouldn't still go with the AsRock.

Hmmm, maybe worth the wait, see if there are any decent B550M boards, or at least wait for them to drop the price on the older B450M boards..

Re: Upgrading from Ivy Bridge - sanity check!

Anyone else running an H50 or similar, not sure if I CBA to order the AM4 bracket for it or if I should just run the stock cooler that comes with the CPU...

How hot do the 1600's run?

Will stick it on the bench to start with, then build up at the weekend once the i7 comes out, might get an m2 drive to replace the sata drive..
