    Price check on desktop please....

    Hi Folks,
My iMac has finally given up the ghost after 9 long years of service, so I'm considering ditching my gaming PC and getting an all singing and dancing new mac mini with an eGPU.

    What's this worth please:

    i5-6600k
    Gigabyte GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 Motherboard
Fractal Design Node 202 Mini-Itx Case
EVGA GeForce GTX 970 - Superclocked ACX 2.0
Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive
Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive
    8GB RAM
    SilverStone SST-AR06 Argon CPU Cooler

I would really rather not split it if possible.

    Thanks....

Have you looked into hackintoshing? I'm not sure the 970 will work though.

I would think at a wild wild guess about 300-350.

Ta. I did look at hackintoshing. I had a play for a few hours last night as I've bought a 5700XT to use for my eGPU, but it's pretty far from just burning a bootable USB stick and installing. You have to bugger about with kexts and download bits and bobs from all over the place.

I'm massively time poor, and the reason I like OSX is that for the massive massive lions share of the time it just works.

I think £300 and it would sell fast. Position it at £350, and be prepared to accept £300

Whats died on the iMac? if its 2011 and earlier then it's pretty repairable, very easily. 2012 onwards quite a bit harder.Assuming that it's a 27" model that is. Other sizes not so sure.

As for Hackintoshing that lot should be fairly straight forward except that to use the 5700 you need to be running Catalina & to do Hackintosh on Catalina can be tricky. You really need to run OpenCore and that, as you say, is more time intensive to get working right compared to Clover.. I would try running Mojave or even High Sierra with the Nvidia card and Clover bootloader for the quick win.

Re: Price check on desktop please....

Yeah, I originally bought it with hackintoshing in mind, but I've decided that it's more hassle than it's worth. As I mentioned with a full time job and 3 small kids, I'm incredibly time poor and I don't want to spend time messing about.

I've pulled the trigger now, so I have to decide whether to keep it as a backup or drop it in the for sale forum.

I'm not sure to be honest, it keeps powercycling. I can get it to single user mode (using cmd+S) on start up, but anything else - including putting it into recovery/Internet recory and now diagnostic mode fails.

I can get it to boot into Ubuntu Live, so I think it may be the SSD part of the hybrid drive.

Could be a failing hard disk, or PSU issue. I had fairly similar symptoms with 2010 iMac and that turned out to be the PSU but then the logic board failed soon after. 27" or 21" & what year?
