Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
Hi all,
I have finally got round to upgrading my pc from an old athlon to a ryzen 5 3600. Yay.
The stuff has just been shipped but I thought I didnt need a new psu.
Looking at the connectors i think i will.
Ok, so new mobo is an MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX, the manual states the power connectors as
24 pin - atx power
8 pin - cpu power 1
4 pin - cpu power 2
and my current psu is an EVGA supernova 650 P2, spec states
24 Pin ATX 1x
EPS (CPU) 2x 8pin (4+4)
But looking at it im not sure.
Any thoughts would be great, thanks.
Stay safe

Re: Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
Ok, found some other threads basically saying no.
Ah well
Re: Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
I'm running a 3600 with just a single 4 pin CPU power connector. That should be good for 150W, so your 8 pin EPS connector is actually overkill.
More to the point, how old is the PSU? You might find it doesn't like modern power management, a modern chip can change how much power it draws very fast. You might well get stability problems with it.
Re: Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
I would have thought you would be ok, doesn't the second eps split into a 4 pin block?
Re: Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
Yep you're fine. You don't need 8pin + 4 pin. 4+4 is already more than enough.
Re: Upgrading a pc, is current psu ok?
I am running a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX1080FE off a Corsair SFX450 450W PSU. 650W is more than enough power.

Argh, and i ordered a new psu directly after the post,
Well at least it will be futurevproof now ... lol

Well if it makes you happier the capacitors in PSUs do degrade over the years so it isn't a bad idea to replace anyway if the PSU is as old as it sounds

It isn't an old PSU:

It has a 10 year warranty, and at worst will be probably be just 4 to 5 years old.

It's never a bad thing to have a spare for...

Do you have a better recommendation?

I think your PSU is fine. These EVGA PSU's are generally built to last as well (their 12 year warranty on the platinum-rated ones prove this)
