    An odd question

I have a newly built PC. My in laws were tossing an old Windows 7 HP. I pulled the DVD RW out of it. I know its pretty worthless being as old as it is but we have no way to watch a DVD and I would like to use it to see my wedding video (well my wife would anyway). My PC sees the DVD drive but when I put a disk in it opens the Windows store to tell me to download a DVD viewer and even though I have done that it still won't open the disk like they used I have to open the program go to Open Disk and then it says D:///D or something like that. Anyway I can get it to work properly again?

But to directly answer the OP, there are several different formats of video files, and not all players are compatible with all formats. Before buying the Microsoft DVD player, run the free trial which will tell you if the disc is compatible or not. If it is not compatible then I think most Hexites would recommend the open source VLC player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Let us know if that solves the problem.

    Agreed.

As an addendum to your post, Windows frowns upon autorun functionality these days anyway, hence it being disabled by default, due to how some machines would get infected via that route in the past.

    Re: An odd question

the commonly bundled OEM software of choice in the past was Cyberlink DVD. It is not free and you will have to buy a licence but if that is what you're familiar with just search for that and you'll find details of how to buy a copy.

Definitely go for VLC, it can play any standard video file I've come across. And it's open source

    Re: An odd question

I'd second VLC media player. There's never been a video file type I've found that it can't play.

what is it with you and doubling posting with virtually identical posts? That's two threads you've done it in now, both over a month old.

Yeah, sorry. I made those posts one day and for some reason they didn't go through so I made them again and they went through the second time. I guess the first time was waiting for approval and finally went through a while later.

+1 for VLC. It's free and seems to be able to open just about any video format.
