Lightbulb Is it possible...to move computer to 'room next door'??

    Happy Easter to all.

I've currently got my Shuttle in the cupboard of my desk. It was fine earlier on in the Winter months, but now as it seems to be getting warmer, the temperatures are getting a bit on the high side. Thats the only reason I can think of.

I need to have the cupboard door open and still the gfx card temp is 51/52*C @ idle.

I don't really want to start replacing fans again. What I would rather do is locate the computer somewhere far away from the desk. Don't know where yet, but first I want to make sure its possible.

The mains power lead is no problem, nor is the ethernet cable and the usb lead. The speaker wires should be easy enough to extend. The only thing is the monitor cable. Ok after a quick google I see these are available.

But has anyone else done this, or can anyone offer any advise? First I thought i could put it in the attic directly above my des, but that's going to be a pain to get to. Haven't got a 'room next door' so next I thought what about the ensuite, but thats got to be a bit on the humid side surely. The only place really is inside the wardrobe, maybe still have to leave the door open to keep temps down but I won't hear it from over there. Its a ver large wardrobe so i can't see heat being much of a problem.

Failing all that, I had the thought of somehow converting my whole cupboard into a fridge?! Or installing some kind of mini-cooler in the bottom of it. Mmmmmm. I just want complete silence.

    Ideas, please!

Thanks, I'm liking the sound of this for once.

But I've cut a hole in the side of my case for the gfx fan. Would there be any way to incorporate this hole so that it's not a 'waste of a hole'? Yeh maybe I could still use the hole as the water cooling block thing would surely need that extra clearance?

What about the PSU fan? I take it you would have to keep it. It is an Adda one which I put in there aggges ago, pretty quiet, but not 100% silent.

Lastly, would you not need to have fans anyway, for the water cooling system?? Ok I can probly (and will) answer most of my questions by doing a bit of research, but your extra opinions will be much appreciated!

    Thanks

I once considered putting my pc in another room entirely but decided to just make my pc much quieter instead. What would you do about cd/dvd drives? I guess you could use external drives.

you could go for an external based watercooling system ( mount the rad outside the room ) - it would mean you could use a great big rad - could almost be run without fans I guess ?

how i watercooled my shuttle, should be fairly simple for you to do, take a look at asetek or alphacool kit for low profile coolers. Get a nice big rad and you could probably run it near silently you could even mod it into your cupboard.

if your room is north facing, you could try putting the shuttle on the window ledge, with fresh air comming in, you should notice a difference.

    Get a KVM switch?

Also see if there is space in your Shuttle, fit a small 4cm fan to help pushing air around, should cut the temperature by a small bit.

Yes it's possible. You can get just about any length of monitor cable which they make for conference/lecture room setups to connect projectors over considerable distances. The practical limit is probably 20m beyond which it will get very expensive ie USB over CAT 5 and monitor signal over optical. My PC is located in the adjacent hallway and the cable runs are 10m. Ebuyer was about the cheapest for high quality belkin cables. The USB repeaters from ebuyer turned out to be USB1.1 spec but I got away without a repeater to the USB2.0 hub. Transfers are slightly slower from a USB2.0 external hardrive via the extension cable and USB2.0 hub compared with direct connection to the PC. I havn't noticed any loss in picture quality with the longer monitor cable perhaps because it is a pro quality cable. I havn't noticed any lag with the USB mouse and keyboard.

Great! - Thanks a lot everyone for all the replies & suggestions Very appreciated.

I think if I was to install water cooling I'd have an external one, as I've just bought a DVDRW drive.

TheEvercool WC-301 looks a good idea at 60 boys. It can be run in or out, and apparently includes all the bits required. But it can only be fitted to one component, either the CPU, gfx, or HD.

Can anyone recommend a similar external model which can cool the cpu, gfx card, and maybe chipset? It doesn't have to be so small and good looking as the WC-301 as it'll be hidden anyway.

Btw my gfx card is the 6600GT. Earlier on, when it was running cooler (I think maybe before I put my surge protector and router in the same cupboard, combined with the cooler weather) it was in the 40's at idle.

mgh0 - just giving your article more thoroughly, looks exciting..

    Thanks again every1

    Mike
