    Ram failure, replacement advice needed.

Ive been temporarily running with 2 x 256mb twinmos ram rated as pc3200 cl2.5. My plan was to get some good cooling for my processor (prescott 3.0e), determine its maximum fsb then buy ram accordingly (to run at 1:1 timings).

However, ive been running this cheap ram faster than i should with poor case cooling and both sticks seem to have failed. So now i have to replace this ram. I think ill go for a dual channel kit with 2 512mb sticks but im on a tight budget. I have my eyes on this kit.

Does anyone else have any recommendations up to about £150, but the less the better. Thanks.

TCCD is a good bet, but slightly over your bidget (cheapest is about £160 for 2x512MB)

Apart from that I'd go for some of the new bh5 type stuff http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=41407

That ram runs with cl3 as 533mhz, im fairly sure the geil could do 533 with the cas changed form 2.5 to 3.

Does anyone know eher you can get any TCCD ram for stupidly cheap?

America. High end ram can't be cheap in UK.

Cheapest I found TCCD in the UK is http://www.pc-memory-upgrade.co.uk/m...ram-pc3200.asp (Tekheads were cheaper, but that was on special offer) slightly out of your budget though.

Go for the bh5 mate - or some UTT stuff, you'll wanna give it some serous volts though.

Thanks for all your suggestions. i have done the vcore droop mod on my motherboard (Asus p4p800-e Deluxe) do you think itd be worth doing the vdimm mod too?

Why would any of those suggested pc4000 kits be any better than the cheaper geil kit i picked?

I think idealy id like to be able to run slightly above 250 fsb as i think my processor is capable of more than that. But also id like to stick to at least cl2.5. So id be overclocking any sticks rated at 250mhz.

I could get two of these. They are very cheap for the speed (their price seems to change almost daily) but are rated at cl3. I could overclock them to cl2.5 but as they arent matched this isnt guaranteed.

i dont currently use it but I've found cruicial in the past to be very good. not just because of the quality but...

i bought a 2nd hand home built PC off a mate which had 2x 256Mb crucial sticks in. one day the machine started reporting 384Mb of RAM instead of 512 and began crashing sometimes. I called crucial who said "yeh that sounds like one of the RAM chips is faulty".

I thought she was going to "helpfully" pass me to sales so i could buy some new stuff but she said "tell you what, since you bought the RAM in the machine 2nd hand I'll process this as a gift return so you don't need to supply the receipt. gimme your email address and I'll send to an RMA form. All you have to do is pay for the postage and send it back, we'll replace it otherwise FOC".

Now thats the sort of service I would expect from ALL computer/IT companies. In fact, I think i told the girl I loved her LOL

Lol, that is good service 8bit. To be fair if the sticks were still under warranty they should replace them anyway, but im impressed they did it without any fuss especially as they were second hand.

Right, well i finally have enough money to buy some ram and its been agonising living on 256mb. I think these are some good choices atm, id love TCCD but my budget is only up to about £160. So tell me what you think will be the best choice for running as close to cl2.5 @ ddr500-540 as possible.

    Geil Ultra 2.5 4-4-7 @ DDR500 - £129.24
    GeIL Ultra-X CAS 2 2-2-5 @ DDR400 - £146.82

    Corsair XMS3200C2PT TwinX 2 3-2-6 @ DDR400 - £114.56
    Corsair XMS3200C2 Pro TwinX 2 3-3-6 @ DDR400 - £123.32

    Patriot Low Latency 2 3-2-5 @DDR400 - £120.51

    Mushkin Black Level1 2 3-2-5 @ DDR400 - £122.57

Im happy to buy second hand etc and any suggestions are welcome.
