    geil 4200 advice?

im thinking of getting a set of these!

i like to have the idea of having higher mhz than higher fsb.

    not that i could tell the difference between a 2.0Ghz p4 and 3.0Ghz p4.

has anybody got any experience with a set of these sticks,
they seem really cheap in comparison to the OCZ / XMS sticks.

    setup:
    Abit IS7 E
    cpu 2.6C
    mem 3500 XMS (does 270 5:4)

    thanx

No real experience, I'm on Corsairs, but I have read good things.

    Try Googling for some reviews...

    please explain.

if you are running you current memory with low latency timings you will notice very little difference in performance! if you can't tell the difference between a 2ghz and 3ghz p4 you definately won't be able to tell the difference between these and your current memory!

though if you really do want some, here's a review -

well with lower fsb eg 220mhz, you will be able to get lets say
    13 x 220 = 2860mhz
    but with 266mhz memory
    13 x 266 = 3458mhz

(if the cpu is not limited)

yeh, i understand what fsb is, just not quite sure what you are hoping to achieve, at the moment you are running at 3.51Ghz, 270Mhz fsb and 216Mhz memory. I'm assuming you are trying to keep the cpu and fsb speed pretty similar and push the memory speed to 266Mhz. I'm not sure what memory timings you are running at the moment, but if they are good, then the difference in performance going to the PC4200 will only be very small, because PC4200 has to use very slack memory timings. It would be an interesting experiment, to see which was fastest, and by how much, but i doubt it would be worth your money.

Nice post. I would personally avoid Geil, much of their early stuff was dodgy and over-volted crap. IMHO look to TwinMOS or Adata.

    i thought that 270 5:4 was mem @ 216mhz

now if i get some geil which will do eg, 300 5:4

    300 5:4 = 240mhz

    is that possible?

thats what i was aiming for.

..............or have i lost the plot?

yes, that is possible, can you get your fsb up to 300mhz though? to check, i suggest you lower the divisor on your current memory, to give you 3:2, which then takes out the memory as a possible limiting factor and see how far you can get.

300mhz fsb means a cpu speed of 3.9ghz, which is pretty high, and while some people have been getting 300mhz fsb on their motherboards, i wouldn't call it common.

if you can reach 3.9ghz with a 300mhz fsb then what you are suggesting is certainly an option, however, 240mhz memory doesn't require pc4200 (which is rated to 266mhz), you are better off getting some memory at a lower speed but with tighter timings, though at the moment any memory above pc3500 won't have great timings.

was just looking @ madonion 3dmark comape site and some people had the xms @ 5:4 312mhz with the tight timings (5,2,2,2)
any idea if the 2,8volt on the mem in the IS7 bios can be overcome?

or do i need a new board?
