Quick question - say I get a VRR monitor that's freesync/g-sync, what do I need to change, where, to get it working?
I assume there's some control panel setting (currently Nvidia) that enables VRR, but what do I set in game? V-sync on or off?

I can only speak for nvidia but you have to turn it on in your monitor settings, I believe most are off as default, then in Nvidia control panel under g-sync there is just a tick box to turn it on.
I have a freesync monitor but its gsync compatible
As for vsync on or off my understanding with freesync anyway is you have vsync on in games however some people are saying you have it off and limit the fps to a couple of fps below your screen res :/

Lol, as with most things I am not sure anyone really knows lol but I expect someone will be along soon to put the record straight

In the Nvidia control panel, there is an option for g-sync if it's supported by your card and monitor. You may also need to enable a setting on your monitor first.
That's it done. I'd assume v-sync needs to be on if you want the game to sync with the refresh rate.
I thought with Nvidia it didn't matter, but I could well be out of date with that.
With AMD cards ISTR it sets how it is handled if you go over the top frequency the monitor can handle, capped to avoid tearing or uncapped for ultimate performance (but with some tearing). I have it turned on, not that I would be going over 144Hz with the old monitor but this one is only 75Hz so would probably want capping.

Easiest guide.
Edit: as Jonj1611 has mentioned. If you limit your FPS to just below max refresh rate you get the benefit of the matched Hz without the input lag of V-sync - if you keep V-sync off but G-sync on.
If it isn't an actual G-Sync moduled monitor though, your effective G-Sync range might not the same as it otherwise would be.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
It is but freesync won't work over HDMI with an nvidia card, you need to do it by displayport

But it doesn't say anything about what to set an in-game option to.
Hmm so in-game setting should be v-sync off? This will just deliver frames as fast as they can from the game and it's up to the monitor/drivers to synchronise with that?Edit: as Jonj1611 has mentioned. What is it about setting v-sync on in-game that causes input lag? I get it for a non-VRR monitor - it'll have to wait for the next full frame to be finished to display updates, but for a VRR monitor it'll presumably 'see' the monitor as 165mhz or whatever so it's hardly going to hang about.
The monitor I'm looking at has a range of 48-165, with LFC, so effectively 24+.If it isn't an actual G-Sync moduled monitor though, your effective G-Sync range might not the same as it otherwise would be.
In-game have it off. In-game V-sync can be iffy so generally you're better with it at the driver level.
As for the lag, that comes if you hit your monitors max rate, at which point it trips in to V-Sync (double/triple buffered etc). TBH, there is a counter for this now in the Nvidia control panel where you can set 'Low Latency Mode' to Ultra and it will only ever buffer 1 frame with V/G-Sync.
