    Guidance on upgrade my rig

Hey everyone - it's been a while since I've been on this forum. I believe last time I was on here was back in 2012-2014! :O

I hope everyone is well and keeping safe!

Anyways I built my first ever rig back in 2012 (thanks to this amazing community! ) and ever since then I haven't touched it since (apart from upgrading ram and gfx). However after PC performance issues (random crashes whilst playing 'Escape from Tarkov') I have decided to upgrade my rig but I don't know where to begin...

    Here's my current specs:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K
    Corsair Hydro Series H70
    Mainboard: Maximus IV Extreme
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
    Memory: 2x8GB
    Case: Corsair 800D
    1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
    120GB OCZ Vertex 2 3.5 SSD
Do I go for a 3XS pre-built bundle and fit it into my current rig - https://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/3xs-x299-oc10

Or do I go for a complete re-build and try to salvage what I have?

PS. My budget is around £1,400

Zen3 is out next month,so I would wait a few more weeks. Rumours say it might end up the new top dog. Also the X299 platform is not worth it for gaming, when the Ryzen 9 and Core i9 on consumer sockets are a better choice. AMD also can run PCI-E 4.0 NVME SSDs,and AM4 is the only consumer desktop platform with PCI-E 4.0 graphics slots too.

If the budget including GPU? I'd recommend rebuilding in your current case if you're happy with it. The power supply and cooler might be OK to re-use, although I'm leery about old AIOs failing and PSUs do lose output as they age. Other than those the RAM won't work on a modern system, and 1TB SSDs are pretty cheap these days so you can go fully solid state for the storage.

For £1400 and gaming, I'd recommend:
    • 3700X processor £290
    • 16GB of 3600 MHz RAM £70
    • Decent B550 motherboard £150
    • When it's in stock for the RRP, RTX 3080 £650
    • 1TB NVMe SSD £150
    • £100 left for a cooler and PSU - 3700Xs aren't fussy about coolers (even the stock one is fine), and a 550-650W PSU should work fine (320W GPU + ~100W ish CPU = no problem)

As well as new CPUs, we're also expecting new GPUs from AMD soon (and reasonable levels of stock of the nvidia ones) so delaying a few weeks will probably offer better value
