What Ryzen 3 mobo and RAM

    Hi folks,
I'm considering replacing my aging i5-6600k with a new 5900/5950. I'm going to get rid of a VMware/Linux box and use this for that, so I'll want to put in 64/128GB of RAM too. I'd like at least 2 M2 SSD ports, preferably 3.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks....

Does it need to support ECC RAM??

Nah, not bothered about ECC RAM, it's not going to be running anything mission critical, it's just going to be a general workstation with a bit of gaming chucked in. I'll probably go for a 3080RTX/6900XT too.

The MSI Meg X570 Unify has 3 M2 slots, but it is a bit pricey at £275!!

Any reason to go for that over say the Gigabyte X570 AORUS ULTRA? That seems to have similar specs on paper and is immediately available....

Re: What Ryzen 3 mobo and RAM

If you are overclocking then the board selection seems quite important, otherwise all the modern boards seem basically competent.

I would just avoid the *really* low end ones with no heatsink, specially if you are going for 12 or 16 cores. Even that could work with enough case airflow. But then anything that low end probably won't have enough dimm slots for you.

Re: What Ryzen 3 mobo and RAM

MSI generally have had a good recent reputation for excellent long-term support with their motherboards (e.g. the only company to promise Zen 3 support for all B450 mobos at the time and one of the leading companies to challenge AMD on that) as well as using quality VRMs even on their budget models. So I went for a MSI board myself when I got a B450.

My impression of Gigabyte is that they have been a bit hit and miss with some good boards and some that skimp on quality. Their support is also middle of the road, they're not terrible like Asus but they don't go the extra mile like MSI either. This is purely impressions from reviews as I've never owned a Gigabyte board. If your needs are modest then I'd say they're probably all fine. If you're overclocking a 5950 then I'd definitely check reviews and my guess would be the MSI board probably will have better VRMs based on my past impressions of the companies.

Re: What Ryzen 3 mobo and RAM

There is nothing wrong with Gigabyte either,as they have UK based RMA. However,MSI generally have had some of the best AMD AM4 motherboards so far and generally decent VRM cooling, good support for their motherboards and most of their motherboards have BIOS flashback features meaning you can update the BIOS without needing a compatible CPU.

Re: What Ryzen 3 mobo and RAM

MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS. These bigger brands will all have decent customer services and warranty. Well, as good as it gets in this space. It depends on the type of things you plan to do on this machine.

I would personally recommend 5600X for more budget end, or go for 5900X for higher end. I don't think 5800X is worth it.

In terms of MB, I would say get a good B550 or any X570

So in terms of RAM, what should I be looking for? I premiered I can start off with a couple of 32gb dimms and slap a matching set in further down the line?

Useful to know, I've always acted with caution when it's come to MSI but they are worlds apart from 10+ years ago when they used to print Microstar on their motherboards. It's good to hear they have unique features, it provides one with options for the future.

Just to give you another option at a higher price point b0redom, ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming X.
It had dual LAN ports which may be of interest from a Workstation perspective. Something I like when utilising VMs, I like to place the VM traffic on a different port to avoid collisions when gaming. Otherwise very similar to the MSI board CAT has mentioned.

What you ideally want is RAM using Samsung B-die or Micron E-die and 3600MHZ DIMMs. This set is usually around £130~£140:

MSI have really stepped up their design and support for the 400 and 500 series motherboards. One of the things they have done well is make sure their VRM cooling is decent.

Another vote for Crucial Ballistix. Optimum ram is 3600MHz, but you will be lucky to get a full 4 sticks to work at that frequency and even at 2 sticks that is officially an overclock and hence would invalidate your warranty. I tend to stick to non overclock 3200MHz stuff, or 2666 in ECC.

Crucial have their own store, though even they are out of stock on a lot of packs. They only seem to have the quick stuff in RGB today:

    https://uk.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/bl2k32g36c16u4bl

Amazon seem to be putting some HyperX and Ballistix ram on their early Black Friday deals, so if you aren't in a hurry you could keep a look out. So far only in small sized sticks though.

The 3600MHZ kits are probably binned a bit better,so there is the option of running at 3200MHZ at lower CAS latencies too.

    Indeed.

There is the whole thing of single vs dual rank dimms as well. Dual rank means more chips so harder to hit high memory frequencies, but on a flip side means the CPU can have twice the open pages to ram which can help memory latency in some applications. All depends how you intend to use the thing.
