    GT710 vs onboard

Have an old msi 880gm-e41 am3 mobo and Athlon II laying around and looking to bring it back in use for a spare media/office suite and am wondering if a GT710 is worth it over onboard graphics for single 1080p monitor use in order to free up ram?

Originally the pc was used with 2gb and windows 7. I will increase ram to 4gb and install window 10. Non-gaming, do you think it's worth it to add gpu in this scenario or stick to onboard graphics.

    Re: GT710 vs onboard

I personally would just test it out, The GT710 is a garbage card tho, but then so is the onboard graphics, 4GB on windows 10 isn't the best experience, I would go for it just to free up ram tbh.

I'm not sure what kind of hardware video acceleration it does, it might just about support h264. If it doesn't I'm not sure it'll offer much improvement for media.

Something that old even with 4gb of ram I'd strongly consider Linux. Win 10 will not be fun

^^^This, the hardware video acceleration on the 710 "might" be far far better than the onboard, I would check that out too.

As spacein_vader said, and I'll repeat myself Windows 10 is not great with 4gb of ram, be sure to use an SSD for the OS, it will make a world of difference on that system

The GT710 isn't not top notch but it's passively cooled which is a bonus. Also the updated version uses Gddr5 rather than ddr3. The next card up is a 1030 which also isn't great value..it's like 70-80gbp which isn't worth it.

Asus gt710 talks site talks about everything but hardware acceration by name. Although reviewers say it handles blurays just fine.

That's why I was thinking have the gpu do the graphics since it has faster memory, saves the ram which win10 seems to love.

    Re: GT710 vs onboard

Seems to run Purevideo 1.0 which according to wiki means it'll have the CPU start the decoding then pick up as long as its h. 264. That and the memory should make it worthwhile given such limited system RAM.

You can get 8GB RAM for about the same cost as a 710
