Texas based chip factories (inc Samsung) to power down

Someone just stuck this up on discord: Due to the snow and the power issues in Texas the chip factories are being asked to shut. Not sure if these are making Samsung GPU chips but not ideal, and could potentially impact ramp-up of the 1050 etc.

Reading the bit I can see without paying
"The Austin facilities represent about 28% of Samsung’s overall production capacity, according to Citi analysts"

Yeah, let's hope they got enough warning that waste is minimised and they can cleanly restart production.

In a time when everything from GPUs down to the new ultra cheap Raspberry Pi are selling out we don't really want a drop in supply!

There was a bit about it on Tom's Hardware yesterday, but no real details.

Re: Texas based chip factories (inc Samsung) to power down

The wikipedia lists the Austin site (search for "S2-Line"):
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ts#Open_plants
Has it down as up to 92,000 300mm wafers with nodes from 65nm down to 11nm, and "Microprocessors, FDSOI, Foundry, NAND".

So biggish but Samsung's Pyeongtaek site is down as 450,000 wafer, while their Xian (China) plant is 100,000, with another Korean site (Giheung) being 62,000 wafers.
    So:
    450,000
    100,000
    92,000
    62,000
    is 704,00 making the Austin plant's 92,000 only about 13% not 28%.
The wikipedia entries might be out of date.

Orderly shutdown for a process which might span up to 3 months might be next to impossible.
