Reasons ? Its a better chip for gaming.Quote:

mmmm its a good start, bu i need more than just gaming, some marketing gibberish like u get fed about intl, that should work
If I were you, I'd just give your advice, with good reasons, and leave it be. There's no point trying to persuade somebody else to do something if they don't want to do it. If they make a mistake, it is their mistake to make.
The reason I'd give is that, from all the reviews on the internet I've seen, the Athlon 64s are faster in games - if you have an Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 of the same performance in games, the Athlon 64 will cost less. If you really want to persuade somebody, I'd concentrate on the fact that Athlon 64s can save you money.
well actually, they are buying a pc, no minitor, just the tower. They have £800 to spead, whats the best, it has to be pre built.(eg dell, mesh etc)
AMD 64s are more effecient, use less power and create less heat. Therefore quieter and cost less electricity to run :D
well, u can get your friend[s?] to go to the internet and read some reviews [proper ones, not fanboy sites]
like Agent said, if your friends are still ignorant, its their loss
Agreed. Can't argue with hard evidence.Quote:

Another plus, if you were to spend the same amount on the A64 as you were on the P4, you'll get a faster A64 chip ;)
not to mention the 64bit capability [<-------- average-Joes and non computer technis love this]
lower heat output, better performance in average, lower prices, what more could u ask for :P
Just let him buy the P4, he will know how crappy his P4 is when he gets it. Make him learn the hard way.
And, selling one less CPU won't make much of a difference for Intel.
nowt wrong with a P4 though. A64 is faster in lots of stuff, but a P4 still goes like a missile. Leave the fella be...he'll be happier with his own choice.
perhaps ignorance is bliss
Plus, if he gets the AMD, regardless of whether the first problem that he gets is that he clicked "OK" on a "route my calls via a dodgy premium rate connection in Mongolia" box in a pr0n site, it'll be all the fault of that "weird processor you made me buy...I knew I should have got a proper pentimium...<whine>" etc, etc... Don't go there. Let him get the P4 or I guarantee you'll be cleaning his machine for free, for ever.
Dunno why everyone is going ape over the intel platform, heres a tip do what I did, forget prescott and look into the older Northwood chips, they perform a hell of a lot better than the prescotts in my experience :) a little digging about you will find 3.2 northwoods for as little as 60 quid. As for crap for games I dunno where that comes from, yes they aren't as fast as A64's in games but they aren't slow either.
My p4 3.2 with a 6800GT pushes 110fps with full details, 1600x1200 with full aa and as in half life 2 and cs-s. Let your mate get what he is happy with :) give it 6 months he will prolly be upgrading again for the new nvidia sli nforce chipset for intel :P
For Intel:
1) Better at video editing
For AMD
1) 64bit
2) Make less heat, thus less noise
3) Socket 939 will be used for quite a while, future upgradability
4) One of the best motherboard chips is for A64, Nforce4
5) Cost less than the equivelent P4
6) Better at gaming
Any more idears? They mentioned something about they thought intl was more compatable with stuff, whats that about?
You need to expand your Intel list ;) AMD and Intel are relatively priced to one another, one drops its prices the other follows suit, the Intel platform is getting a version of the nforce chipset ;) so that wipes out the AMD being the only nforce option, less heat, yes true for the Prescotts, my 3.2 runs at 28c idle and 37c load on air :) so heat isn't an issue if you ventilate your case correctly, 64 bit, yes good for future upgrads :) but the lack of 64 bit apps renders it usless but does allow 32 bit apps have a little more headroom for rogue bits flying about. No point in using the latest 64 bit OS just yet as all your old apps are 32 bit ;) along with the majority of games.
I have used both intel and amd over the years, I went to AMD for a while then went back to Intel as 3D Studio Max ran like a slug on the AMD :/ But as your mate is going the gaming route point him in the direction of a 3200+ and clock it or a 3500+ and leave it at stock, depends how deep his pockets are :P
"...the Intel platform is getting a version of the nforce chipset so that wipes out the AMD being the only nforce option..."
well, unless the initial performance 'demonstrations' are flawed, the nfroce chipset for the p4 is slower than the one for the amd64 platform
+ nforce5 is not out yet so it is not an option
If you're talking bang for the buck the AMD is the way to go. If your friend has money to burn it is no problem getting a superfast system with either platform. That P4 is old tech though, and unless he gets the 6xx series he's gonna get his arse kicked in most applications.
It's his dime though. I'm with Agent. It's just not worth it trying to save these guys from the Intel marketing machine. I say, let'em fry!
I made a hugh mistake getting my P4 3.2c chip, if only I had listened to my mate and gone for a AMD 64bit processor.
