    Headset Recommendations (Primarily for gaming)

    Morning

As the title states, I'm looking for any advice/experience as it's been quite a while since I last dipped my toe in this area. I used to work at a retailer where we sold lots of Sennheiser and Grado, so not unfamiliar with a decent set of cans, and I have a couple of pairs of 'HiFi' headphones - one particularly vintage pair of SH HD600's that date back to the late 90's, they look absolutely, revolting, but still sound great
Also have a more recent pair (about 8 years old) of B&W closed back PX7's - these sound great but rely on leather pads and a tight fit for isolation and become a little hot and uncomfortable after a while, so not ideal for 2 or 3 hours play on the PC. What I would really like is a wireless, comfortable set that will work with my PC and my phone, so i can use them for listening to podcasts etc as well. Looked at the well reviewed 'gaming' sets; Logitech (too many to list) Astro 50 - Razer BlackShark Pro and even toyed with the Audeze Mobius and Penrose. But the design of them all with the exception of the expensive Audeze leaves me a little cold. I am too old to be wanting LED lights on my head or go faster stripes, I just want Sound quality and comfort.

So the dilemma I am left with.... is will a gaming headset with DTS or DOLBY ATMOS surround worth it or a do I buy a decent pair of wireless HiFi type headphones - something like; Sony WH-1000XM4 or Sennheiser Momentum 3 ( I still have friends at the retailer I used to work for so I can get a little discount on certain products)

In all my years of Audio retail and gaming, I've never tried a 'surround' set of headphones, so I really don't know if they are worth it for gaming????

    Any thoughts/experience in this area?

You can always buy a seperate mic and put it on your desk and use your current headphones.

Hi Cat - Very long time no speak - hope you are well mate

^^This^^ is what I have been doing for ever and a day.

The thing is, that I would like something more comfortable for longer sessions (I work from home some days and sit in front of the PC all day) and also wireless, so actually happy using a separate MIC and a set of headphones and is not a problem for me - the attached MIC is not the real draw, more of an added bonus really.

The real question is - Is surround on a decent pair of 'Gaming' headphones worth having, or is it literally a gimmick? If it's the latter then i will probably go down the route of a decent wireless audio pair - and probably an update to my 2007 logitech desktop mic that droops and intermittently cuts out !!

    Hope you are well too!

One thing about wireless headphones is that they will weigh more if you want something with decent battery life ,and unless the battery is user replaceable they are limited by the lifespan of the battery. Also latency is an issue if you want to game/watch TV - radio headphones tend to be low latency, and for Bluetooth headphones you need to look at having something which has AptX(or something similar) and the latest version of Bluetooth(ideally version 5).

Re: Headset Recommendations (Primarily for gaming)

You need to try them to see if it works for you, and also check the games you play. If the game will only output stereo it's a bit of a waste.

Thanks Space - Having advocated and extolled the virtues of the 'demo' I completely understand the importance of an individual experience. I guess what I was trying to gather from those that have had or have surround headsets is, is it a game changer or just a nice to have? (Subject to the game being in surround of course) On that subject, is it only the triple A titles that tend to output more than stereo ? Can't say that I ever look..

Re: Headset Recommendations (Primarily for gaming)

The games I play are a mixed bag, some do it, some don't, some have a box that says they do but appears to make no practical difference.

To my ears anyway. I find stereo to be adequate in locating players behind me in an FPS etc but your mileage may vary.

The only time I've ever noticed a surround headset making any difference is in multiplayer in COD games, everything else, stereo would probably suffice. I currently use Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless SE High-Fidelity Gaming Headset (7.1 Surround Sound) and they make little to no difference in positional sound ques in the games I now play, also they're uncomfortable for extended periods of time as they're heavy (metal construction).

I have some BOSE Quiet Comfort 2 for bluetooth audio streaming for TV / Films and Music, aside from decent audio they're really comfortable for extended periods, so my only real suggestion is to ensure you get something with a lighter build (doesn't lessen the build quality being plastic). The sound side of things is really subjective to the user in question, especially with 7.1 surround and the choice of games being played.

Atmos for Headphones and DTS:X are completely software based and the licence you can purchase for each and even trial them on Windows.

With that out the way, bear in mind there is likely to be some lag issues with BT headsets that don't use
    AptX LL.

A lot of people suggest Fidelio X2HR + mod mic for all in one, although as Cat suggests, can just use your existing earphones and buy a mic?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Headset Recommendations (Primarily for gaming)

i've had a few pairs of wireless gaming headphones in the last few years - and there is only one I would recommend (happens to be what I have now..) - the Audeze Penrose.

Excellent sound quality from the Planer drivers, really good mic, and so far solid reliability/build quality.

Prior to these, I had the Arctis pro Wireless - twice - but each pair fell apart (hence the "twice" bit, got one replaced under warranty) - they have the benefit of a removable battery & some surround options, but they have a serious design flaw that causes them to fall apart, and the sound quality is not a patch on the penrose.

Below those, you have something like the Astro A50s or the top end Corsair sets - but their sound quality is just not as good as either the Arctis or Penrose...both are cheaper though and still offer a decent mic.

When it comes to surround - I would not bother. It really doesn't add a lot and in many games I have tried it on it really ruins the mix - Atmos for headphones is Awful in call of duty/warzone for example - the stereo mix is just so much better. I found the same with DTS:X too.

This is the set I would recommend though - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/aude...rose-x-headset

Stay away from anything that is bluetooth only - the latency is a real killer for games. That said, both the Arctis & Penrose have "dual wireless" meaning they support bluetooth as well, meaning they can be connected to your phone etc. That can be quite nice when gaming if you want to stream music from phone your and still hear the game audio, as both the BT & PC wireless connection can run at the same time

edit: I should add that the penrose use low latency wireless, and I don't detect any lag when using them. You do have to plugin a dongle, but it's small/unobtrusive enough and can sit happily at the back of my PC.

Another old face - hey Terbinator

OK, so I am getting the impression that the surround sound angle does as I had kind of guessed, appear to be subjective at best - so I think perhaps a good quality set of audio NON gaming wireless cans plus a desktop mic is the way forward. I'm steering towards the SONY WH-1000XM4, does anyone have any personal experience of these ?

Any budget wired desktop mic or webcam/mic recommendations appreciated - in fact the latter would probably be more helpful .. for the occasion I need a desktop Mic a webcam would probably be helpful too

I had looked at the Penrose and the Mobius - both look very attractive, perhaps they will go back in the mix. The downside to these is that I don't think I can get a deal on them. Hmmmm decisions, decisions !!!

^^ yes the Penrose are in high demand and tend to sell out quickly. I'm surprised Scan have stock tbh! The mobius are not actually wireless for gaming (they have a bluetooth module, but see below..) and are not really a viable option imo. They are great if you can cope with the wire though.

Honestly I would steer you away from any BT only cans, even the XM4s (Which are a great pair of headphones for music & work) - I have a pair for travelling with as they have ANC..but I just don't like them at all for gaming.

Morning Spud, appreciate your take, what is it about the XM4s that you find so unpalatable when gaming is concerned ? I had almost settled on them as a front runner, based on the reviews I’ve read plus the fact I should be able to get them for under £200

EDIT: Think I may have answered my own question, Bluetooth connection can basically introduce latency issues with Gaming? So I think a solution (as I would like to be able to use the headphones with my phone as well, could be a pair that offers a wired connection as well.

Sennheiser momentum 3 seem to do this, are there any others in this kind of price/audio quality range?

Yes - for me it was the latency, which can you can mitigate to some degree with the right codecs, but you then sacrifice sound quality to get that lower latency. Using them wired for gaming absolutely gets around that problem though. That's why the best "gaming" headset's use 2.4ghz wireless rather than bluetooth.

I don't know much about the Sennheisers so can't really comment - but I think pretty much all of the wireless gaming headsets i've seen also have a hard wired option.

Thanks again Spud, I think a decent audio wireless pair with Bluetooth and a wired option is probably the way I’m going to go. More research required me thinks !
