If this is what you're talking about, the Abit NF7-S v2.0 mobo comes with a PATA-to-SATA converter (Serielle IIRC) to connect a PATA drive up to the SATA interface on the mobo. Only reasons for actually doing so would be to prevent sharing drives on channels, smaller data lead, perhaps a slight increase in speed (could also be a decrease) and possibly lower CPU usage too.

I have two of these Abit serielle converters going spare as I've upgraded to SATA drives. You'll need an SATA cable as well (40p on ebuyer), but they are yours for a tenner.

gordy@ sony, nice choice. did you get the retail or oem version? if oem, you really should upgrade the firmware.. (if you haven't already).

Yup, Parallel ATA such as 'normal' drives based on ATA66, ATA100 and ATA133 for example. Serial ATA (SATA) is the new std, it's designed to use fewer wires and less power hence the shrink in cable sizes although there are other (mostly potential) benefits. All we used to talk about was IDE drives as that covered all std (P)ATA drives (the alternative was SCSI) ... but since SATA the term IDE or ATA don't make a clear distinction anymore.
