Question Motherboard, Chipset, MOS target temperatures

    Hi all

I have some new hardware but in my nearly 20 years of PC building, I've never really known what are acceptable temperatures for the motherboard, chipset and MOS. I have collected some logs (AIDA64) for these sensors and maximum temperatures achieved with 0% system fans are as follows:
    Motherboard: 50
    Chipset: 63
    MOS: 54

What max temperatures should I be looking to target with my fan curves? FWIW, MSI mobo with 4 steps to each curve. 2 140mm Noctua fans on front, 1 120mm Noctua fan on rear setup configured ?traditionally (front pull, rear push) with Arctic CPU cooler exhausting out of top. PC combines as HTPC for streaming so I like a profile on the quieter side when not gaming.

In the UK, mild winter, 20 Celsius room.

    TIA

Re: Motherboard, Chipset, MOS target temperatures

    The temps all look fine.

Generally I wouldn't worry unless you getting around:
    Motherboard 100+
    Chipset 90+
    Mos 100+

Overall that board appears to have good heatsinks and a chipset fan so I wouldn't worry too much, and you fan arrangement should give plenty of air flow.

So I would focus on cpu temps and fan curve as that will be the biggest variable but should be near silent for basic tasks.

I have the same motherboard, but I'm using a 5900X cpu. From the temps you've reported, I assume those are while the pc is idle, rather than under load? I'd broadly agree with the max temps suggested by Percy1983 above. As long as you have reasonable airflow, you should be fine even while stressing the system.

Re: Motherboard, Chipset, MOS target temperatures

You've intrigued me as I have the X570s (without the motherboard fan).

    On idle:
    Motherboard/System - 33c
    Chipset - 41c
    MOS - 34c

Room temp currently 18.5c (as displayed by Lidls thermometer)

After a game of BF 2042

    Motherboard/System - 42c
    Chipset - 49c
    MOS - 46c

    Room temp currently 18.8c

Normally I don't even look at those temps at all.

I'm guessing the X570S has some advancements in die size to not require a fan? I've never actually looked into what changed.
I just remember the past when chipset fans failed, impossible to replace and often whiny that I just wanted to avoid history repeating itself.

Sorry for the delay in replying; I completely forgot I posted this here, too!

Thank you for your advice. I have focussed on getting some nice fan curves to manage the CPU and GPU temps which should hopefully keep the mobo temps at acceptable levels.

Sorry for the delay in reply. An important question you ask that I really should have added in my first post... these temperatures were the highest achieved over three different days, under gaming load (Civ 6, Insurgency and MW2).

Thanks for sharing your data. We run a higher room temperature, perhaps between 21-22 degrees which perhaps accounts for some of the variance between your and mine, not least a different board.

Agree, those tiny fans are really whiney; I've basically set a curve for it to never turn on unless it hits 80 degrees. When it's on, it's very irritating soit's nice to know there's a lot of headroom before I need to trigger it.

It was apparently entirely a software change. I hope that means that vanilla X570 boards now run cooler as well.
