    3700X or 5600X?

So I was set on a 5600X and to use the supplied HSF to get me started as I'm going to undervolt it and not overclock it...
But I've just realised the year older 3700X is 8 cores and only 100mhz base clock slower...

Now ideally I'd prefer 8 cores for future proofing and I've heard things like Cyberpunk can use 8 cores? So it'd be nice to have something current that can make as much use of what I'm buying as possible?

I can buy either the 5600X or the 3700X with an AMD HSF for the same price secondhand... I did consider a 5700X but I'd need to spend £80 on a Dark Rock Pro 4 or more for a HSF plus £60ish or more than a 5600X/3700X on the cpu on it's own secondhand - don't really want to spend another £140 for the 5700X just for it being newer/8 core?

    The spec will be 1 of the 3 above cpus, 32gb cas 16 ddr4 3600mhz, msi mortar b550m pro wifi matx, corsair rmx 550, 2tb crucial p3 pro pci-e 4.0 and a rx 6600 or maybe 6600xt...

So which is better choice for my chosen hardware for 1080p gaming? This will ONLY be used for gaming - I have macs for everything else, so any other benefits are irrelevant! I also don't stream.

I don't want anything higher TDP wise than 65w hence considering all 3 of these as I'm building a budget 2nd hand build that doesn't eat electric just purely to scratch my itch for missing at the desk keyboard/mouse gaming - as I have multiple consoles for the rest.

I could go get a ps5 but I will repeat myself I like BOTH console and pc gaming and haven't had a gaming rig for 15 years so just want to scratch the itch without spending silly money on a mega spec rig nor the electric to run it, as I love the idea of it costing only a bit more than a console and being able to rinse say rpg's or online for hours of an evening.

If I went for a mega spec rig i'd rather just use my 65" 4K tv and a ps5 - As I say though I JUST WANT to enjoy the at the desk keyboard and mouse experience that I've missed so the spec above is final bar the cpu help - so please it is THAT simple

Please let me know what you would choose given this application, and I've no interest in intel sorry

    Thanks!

    Re: 3700X or 5600X?

tbh 5600/5700x/5900x/5950x are the ones worth considering. All the others don't offer much different.

5600 and 5600x differ slightly but the lower power of the non-X might actually mean whole-life cost is lower for a marginal performance drop.

if going AM4 why not just snag a full fat R9 and get the most out of it? It's a shame they didn't do a black edition 5950X3D with pimped caches (and without gimped clocks) as a last hurrah to the AM4 socket. I would have pounced if they had. I guess they wanted to push AM5

As above consider the 5600, but overall the architectural improvements will make up for that less cores and perform better in lightly threaded applications.

Note that I'm running a 5900X on my cheap old (£30 new) Arctic Freezer A34 eSports here. Big cooling is nice, and will bump up your clock speeds to use the extra thermal headroom, but an expensive cooler isn't mandatory.

I might some day treat myself to a monster sized tower cooler, but for now I'd rather spend such money on a new hi-hat for the drum kit

I'm highly considering a 5700X now and a Dark Rock Pro 4 as then I get the best of both worlds, a 65w tdp and 2 extra cores for a bit of future proofing headroom... Also really wanted a DRP4 last year as it's a beast and looks awesome too so the fact the 5700X doesn't come with a cooler makes for an easy excuse, I did consider cheaper coolers but I am fussy haha!

    Re: 3700X or 5600X?

I would get the Ryzen 7 5700X - I have one in a very small mini-ITX case and it has no problems boosting upto 4.65GHZ in games with a low profile CPU cooler. The Ryzen 7 5700X is generally more efficient than a Ryzen 5 5600/5600X IIRC,because it has more cores in the same power envelope:
