Question 3.5" Hard disk cooling mod recommendations ???

    Hi All

I've setup a dell 7060 mini tower as a NAS and would really like to add some cooling for the HDD, at the case has minimual cooling inside it.

Just wanted to see if anyone has any recomendations what they are using to cool their 3.5" HDD?

I been looking about and found what looks like heatsinks with fans in but not sure how well they work?

    Cheers

I had those HDD fans and they made absolutely no difference. There was so little airflow I felt they were a gimmick. I hate to say it but that chassis looks dreadful for airflow and could be a Dutch oven problem.

I'm wondering if the PSU is trying to be the fans for the disks.
I would see what happens personally, monitor the temps and act if they do go too high

Would one of those PCI Slot exhaust Blowers fit to draw more air through the case?

Ah yes, had one of those as well, it was a dual slot one and that really did push some air!! I'd completely forgotten about them. I think it had two speed options.
That would actually be recommended regardless of the disks in that chassis

It looks like Startech are still making a single slot version

Thanks for confirming, I was about to order one but thought i would check here to see what people thought of them first, glad i did. Yeah the case is pretty poor in design for cooling and lacking in connectors to allow me to install more fans

If your case doesn't have full size slots you might be able to hack off the bottom of the blower metal back plate to screw it down.

Make a 3d printable bracket/fan shroud, probably the easiest way, failing that, see if someoen else has done it before, check thingiverse or cults3d and see whats on there.

Re: 3.5" Hard disk cooling mod recommendations ???

if you add another fan pushing air out by the pci slots you could cause a negative pressure pulling air through the front and past the drive. of course upping the speed of the existing rear fan could help too.

Well spotted Percy, i didn't even notice the rear fan so it does make it pointless to add a PCI Slot exhaust Blower.
