S'pose if your computer's in a not particularly accessible location it'd make sense. But then you'd not be able to use its optical drives either in that situation. Sounds like it has a limited market apart from for gimmick value, which is admittedly kinda kewl in a geeky way

may be usefull for a home theater pc, watching tv, playing music, movies etc. But, does the MCE remote not do this?

I made one for my pc, two iluminated push-to-make switches, and ten mins with soildering iron.

- One for the power, lights up when on.
- One for reset, lights up on HDD activtly.
- Make the wire as long was you like, and arrange the buttons where you like.

- Total, about £2 for the switches, had the rest anyway.

Might be useful for testing a motherboard before installing it in the case, or for a PC you keep in a cabinet, but otherwise it's very limited. Imagine if the cable's only 1m long, how useless would that be? I'll bet it's only 2m, just enough to reach a desktop.

The connection is to the Pin Header on the motherboard via a passthrough cable (supplied)

This is wired. The cable is approx 1.2m

I've done the same sort of thing, completely free, and its cable was maybe 6, 7 meters long. Mine had more uses too, since I had it set up to control Winamp (Play, pause, stop, next, previous, shuffle), manage volume, and it could shutdown and start up my PC (Granted, it couldn't show harddrive acitivty. ). Worked through a serial port, and, while it certainly looked more ghetto than that ignition box, paying anything more than nothing for something like that is a waste in my opinion.

Well, it had lights and buttons and such, but they weren't blue & black, or anything like that. Personally, I wouldn't have minded a more professional-looking finish. Maybe I should do that with a wireless version, should I ever make one..

I got a PC Remote starter (a proper one that resembles a car alarm fob) 2 years ago from one of the mods KustomPCs forums. He had ordered then as a batch from the US, and sold them separately. Very useful with quite a long range, whilst I'm parking the car outside, I press the button, and the PC will start and will be completed its loading by the time I get to the PC. Plus, if I forget to switch the PC off, I don't need to run back into the house to do so.

Yet another pointless and pricey gadget from maplins. I would rather just remove the panel from the front of the case, and solder some longer wires inbetween. To finish it off, i would place it into a small plastic case to go on the desk and drill holes for the leds and buttons

I installed a key switch on my pc. It stops my parents from using my computer without my permission.

And I use a BIOS password to stop my kids from using mine
