First Ever HD fault today.

For all my 12 or so years playing with computers, i've finally had my first personal hard disk failure.

A 40GB maxtor has just let go in the most enormous way and has physically damaged the platters.

It was an awful noise and i'm feeling like its done me that much faithful service it may even get a cremation service for its honour of so many years hard work hehe.

Sorry had to share, been busy day and i'm rather bemused by it all

12 years and first HD failure, impressive. I have ~15 in 6 years . The most funny case is 3 failed in 1 hour and i swear by god i don't know why.

You have had so much luck I would say. Last yr I had 8 HDD failures.
I had to do full surface scan EVERY DAY to make sure everything is working fine.
2 Broken Maxtor 160G, 1 Broken WD120G, 3 Broken WD200G and 1 Broken WD60G.

I once went full RAID1 to make sure my data is not lost. I was on 512K broadband that time and it took me 3 FULL MONTHS at 100% network load to take back my backup copy on remote server.

But seems after I switch from a 380W Mid-quality PSU (still cost me 30 quids) to a 550W High-qual Antec (cost me 80 odd that time) and got a new aluminium case the problem is solved.

I've never lost HDD yet fortunately. used quite a few old ones too. Did have a rediculously loud WD drive that i RMA'd, using their advance rma procedure, got a new drive in 5 days.

But once they have been 'fixed' they seem to only last a few months, i think they botch em to last maxtor is the worst for it imo

Damn, you're lucky. I've had 2 hard drive failures so far. Both maxtors iirc

Yup, Ive had 1 old maxtor fail on me, but thats it so far. Even this old fujitsu 10gig jobbie I have here still works :O

All the dead HD's ive had (almost all from other peoples systems) have been PSU related.

I've had more hdd's fail here than I can think of, IBM/WD/Quantum/Seagate, IDE/SCSI you name it I've had one die

On a lucky streak atm - been over 9 months since I RMA'd a drive, fingers crossed

Only ever had one, and that was an IBM, pre HGST, I needn't say more, i shouldnt have bought the thing in the first place, but after finding that out it was too late....

Never had a HDD that was my own fail in over 19 years in IT! Had a few go for companies that I worked for though They certainly don't make them like they used to. I remember in the very early 90's I opened up a hard drive and propped the spindle with a broken matchstick to keep it from making a racket while I dd'd (dd=UNIX command) the contents over to a blank drive!

I've never had a HDD fail on me in my long years of working with computers.

I've broke one that was 80 Gb and that was due to physically snapping the circuitboard while trying to solder 3 pins back onto the IDE connection.

Tig - take the magnets out of the drive and use them as "fridge magnets". They are VERY POWERFUL so once on the fridge they maybe quite hard to remove but they are great for pinning even quite heavy items to it

Might be better to go with scsi for that sort of cluster - they spend more money making scsi drives, so they tend to have better build quality. And they are often warrented for longer and better able to deal with poor environments.

Only HDD I've had fail is my old 15k rpm disk, I somehow managed to smash one of the chips on the back of it, it doesn't spin up now.
