Question Intel to pip AMD at the dual-core post?

Intel to pip AMD at the dual-core post?
Days after AMD confirmed its dual-core desktop chips would be
here early, Intel has promised that desktops featuring dual-core
Pentium 4 chips will ship 'immintently'
    http://newsletters.zdnetuk.cneteu.ne...09667/57524/0/
    In response to:
    Dual-core Opterons to debut early
AMD is going to release its latest dual-core chips later this
month, several months ahead of schedule
    http://newsletters.zdnetuk.cneteu.ne...09667/45092/0/
Oooo, the race is on people.

Either way, its going to be a price premium for the first 6 months at least.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that only Advanced Server 2003 could take advantage of dual core chips anyway.

XP pro can use 2 cpu's - it doesn't count virtual/logical cpu's (HT) so from that point it should be ok for XP and not just server. I can't see any other issues arising from dual core to stop it from working on XP.

Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000 will work just fine with dual core CPUs.

Intel has the first desktop dual core chips and AMD will have the first server (x86) dual core chips.

I was going to get a dual-core opteron, but the price premium on them is huge. I may settle for a dual core Pentium D 2.8GHz and overclock the **** out of it.

What about the logical processors? With HTing the dual core P4's with have 4 processors including the logical ones, and Win 2k and XP surports up to 2 IIRC.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Although it is chinese but the pictures should be good enough to tell everything.
Windows XP works with dual dual core Opterons. Windows counts for sockets but not physical CPU.

    http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/dualcore-opteron-4.htm
Shows that it is 4 CPU, and the OS used is Windows XP.

Yeah was just going to say that. XP has always supported dual Xeons with HT (I.E. two physical, four logical CPUs); it's good news that they support dual core Opterons too.

I've read that XP has some scheduling issues with two processors and hyperthreading; it tends to prefer to send the second thread to the second logical processor on the first physical processor, rather than send it to the second physical processor, so it doesn;t take full advantage of both when only a couple of threads are running. I assume this can be patched, and I'm not sure if it's always been a problem when using dual Xeons with HT.

I'm not sure if windows 2000 will support 2 processors with HT enabled, but Pentium Ds don't have HT. The only dual cores pentiums with HT are the dual core extreme edition.

I read somewhere yesterday that desktop dual core AMD was originally forecast for June so there will be changing their maps but the availability will probably be around then ? they will be plenty of paper launches though
