    New system

Just double checking as i've got the money to order my new system:

    Shuttle SN25P
    AMD 3500+ Clawhammer
    and a Connect3D X800XL

I've already got everything else but does that system sound fine? CPU wise mainly is it ok? There's so many 64-bit CPU's i can't decide between them

    Cheers

AFAIK there is no s939 3500 clawhammer...

Either go for a winchester or wait for the venice cores (anytime soon).

Rest sounds fine. I wish I'd have waited and got the SN25P

Don't mean to be rude but you really should check before you say something is non-existent The 3500+ Clawhammer definitely does exist and is for sale at many e-tailers. Also, from what i know the Clawhammer has the same core as the FX-55 with just half the cache disabled which is why it's apparently better than the Winchester.

Also, is the X800XL on par with the 6800GT? Just without the PS3 support right? And obviously the difference in clock speeds as well as ATi having 3Dc support? Just checking 'cause i haven't yet had an ATi in this generation, only nVidia.

AFAIK X800XL > 6800GT for most purposes and worse for a few others (e.g. DOOM 3)

Unfortunately I cannot justify buying either...

Ah, well i currently have an AGP 6800GT (which i'm going to sell) which is a great performer, just hoping the X800XL is just as good in the PCI-Express form

Hehe, i've made worst mistakes in my time But i've checked out some benchmarks but unfortunately there's only comparisons with the Clawhammer chips on an nForce3 board whereas the Winchester is on an nForce4 board when compared so i still cannot justify my decision as of yet

Clawhammer is the same specs as the Newcastle cored 3500+ so its: -

    - 2.2GHz core clock
    - 512KB Cache
    - 200MHz FSB
    - 130nm die

Really you would be better with a 90nm die Winnie as it will run cooler which is very important in a shuttle

I don't think the venice core is cooler than the winchester but it does overclock better. Guess that's a mute point in a shuttle so probably isn't worth waiting for.

When xbitlabs reviewed the venice core they actually found it slightly warmer, although not by much.

Besides the winchesters overclock very well anyway.

I've already got 2 x 512MB of PC3200 (Corsair Pro, 2-2-2-5, XMS stuff) and i've got a seagate and a WDSE sat here too. My old rig was a decent spec, had a 6800GT in it etc. Still got most of the hardware here in fact
