    Question Is this right?

My friend is running a Giga-byte GA-K8NS Pro Socket 754 board with a Athlon 64 3000 and 2 sticks of Crucial 512MB DDR 333MHz PC2700 memory. He is experiencing problems (hang ups, crashing etc).

I told him that it's probably because his mobo is overclocking the memory, as the CPU speed is set at 200MHz, and 200x2=400 not 333. Am I right, or should he be able to use that RAM with that CPU?

    Thanks for your help.

That memory shoudl work fine in his system. The board should detect the SPD and set the appropriate memory ratio, maybe it's not for whatever reason. In this case he should set the DDR333 ratio manually.

There doesn't seem to be a independant control for memory speed, just CPU. How would I adjust the memory speed on this motherboard?

Hang ups and crashing could be cause by a number of things, how did you automatically decide that it was his mobo overclocking the RAM?

Well, the system hangs up at the POST screen during a memory check. He's also recently added the second stick.

He also had a faulty RAM stick originally (diaganosed from the BIOS beeps), so unless he's been sent a second stick of faulty RAM, it's not a hardware fault.

Also the PC is much more stable using one stick, and both work on their own.

    See here:

Ctrl-F1 to get into the section that deals with timings. Set the RAM speed to 166 for PC2700.

Do as Rave says, but pull the second stick first, especially if it was stable before the second stick was added.
