Turion CPU in a desktop

Hey

I was thinking of the possibility of putting a the new turion cpu (754pins) in a destop s754 board.

The reason that this would be interesting is that dual core will be coming to the turion and this could prove to be a very good future upgrade path for those of us with s754 sytems.

I have a shuttle g4 and the reduced power draw of the turion would come in very handy.

Anyone got any thoughts?

It's all about wether the BIOS wil recognize the chip or not.

I really doubt AMD will make dual core turions socket 754. A single memory channel with a dual core processor may become a bottleneck, even with an on-die mem controler.

It might be more of a bottleneck than it is with a single core chip (where most of the time it's not a bottleneck at all) but I doubt it'll be a big problem. ATM (all else being equal) you seem to see between a 1-5% boost from running dual channel over single on A64. Even if that becomes 2-10% with dual core there's still a boost to be had going dual core on S754.

I personally want dual core ASAP for encoding video and crunching FAD (I reckon Distributed Computing enthusiasts will be among the earliest adopters of dual core) but right now I can't see that dual core brings much benefit for gamers/ normal computer users. As a future upgrade when the software has caught up it should be cool.

It would be so cool if they did it on s754. Low power draw and 2 cores. It would be amazing.

And very unlikely..... 939 is going to be the lowest platform Dual Cores are likely to appear on.... however - who knows - we may see a 939 Turion eventually?
