I've got 768Mb of RAM in my laptop makes a masive difference form the orignal 256Mb. 2.5" disk are so slow!

When i got my laptop, i formatted it straight away and put a clean install of XP Home on it. It runs super fast. In fact, it booted up faster than my main system, it does everything pretty much spot on.

It's a centrino lappy though, 1.5GHz, 512MB of RAM, Mobility 9700, smallish for it's release and spec too

My laptop has a 1.7G pentium-M and it's pretty damn quick in terms of CPU - on a par with an XP 3200+. GFX performance is bobbins, but then it always is in laptops.

Laptops can be very fast, I suspect its so slow because it has such a small amount of ram. I remember 256mb ram on my old computer and it was so sluggish. On my laptop it has a p4 3.4EE and 1gb ram, its very quick.

It's still a slug compared to a desktop.

Bound to be slower than a modern desktop by virtue of the technology. I use a company IBM T40 and its slower than a desktop but still fast enough to get my work done (the usual middle management fair). I agree with others here, more memory is going to help a great deal.

Hey, me too! I think it's GRATE - centrino-tastic (although we don't have a wireless network configured at work...)

My centrino has a fan, but it's very quiet and not always on. All in all it's a lovely machine to use, can't say I've ever felt it's creakingly slow tbh. Lets face it, unless you're gaming you don't need anything over about a 1G cpu and 512mb ram anyway.

There are many reasons why laptops are great. It's just that performance (for obvious reasons) is not that great compared to desktops.

To have a powerful computer it helps to have power.

Heh its a packard bell, nuff said really...

They dont tend to do good setups with their machines/laptops, it will be a custom XP install filled with bloatware, loading lots of drivers and programs that it doesnt need.

More ram *should* fix it, or at least help. Best solution is to format it and install a 'proper' version of XP, ie not a packard bell one. Although i dont think your going to do that

lol my friend has a packard bell and saying he hates it would be an understatement! Its falling to pieces basically, but it was way cheap.

I have an acer treavelmate 8006lmi - 2ghz centrino with ati 9700, its really quick, although obiously the hard drive does slow it down a bit. As soon as I got it I bought 1gig of geil golden dragon sodimm and its sooo smooth and a pleasure to work with now.

to speed up the laptop buy more ram and a faster hard drive. it probably has a 4200rpm hard drive at the mo. However due to the size of laptop hard drives the 7200 drives cannot ever be as quick as desktop 7200 drives - the spinny bit (spindle i think) is smaller and so it spins slower at the edges (angular velocity is lower)
