what is the difference between pc 2100 and pc 2700??
and will my mobo run 2700
mobo = ecs k7vmm+
memory details = 266 (this is all i can find )

pcxxxx is the rating, in MB/s. to find it out we do:

pcxxxx = freq x 2 (for ddr) x 64 (bus width) / 8 (bits in a byte)
(or pcxxxx = freq x 16 or pcxxxx = ddr x 8, for those that are lazy)

pc2100 = 133/266ddr
pc2700 = 166/333ddr.

ur mobo may be able to run at 2700 speeds, check in the manual/specs.. if not u can always run the pc2700 at pc2100, they are backwards compatable.

Basically PC2100 is DDR266, designed to run at 266mhz (133x2 because it's DDR like your FSB). PC2700 is DDR333 but will fall back to any speed below it including DDR266 and should be happy to run with faster timings at a lower speed for a little increase in speed too. Usually the RAM is run in sync with the FSB, very few mobos gain by running async, slower is a very bad idea if it's even possible on SktA so faster is the async option.

ECS K7VMM+ KМ266 FSB266 SDRAM&DDR VGA+AGP4x 2ch AC'97 Lan etc. Almost all hw support is due to the chipset, in your case the VIA KM266 which is heavily based on the KT266 IIRC. That means you get 133/266FSB support but should get to 144/288FSB if you o/c (cooling, CPU and RAM permitting). The KT333 added support for DDR333 (PC2700) but was still stuck to 266FSB, it allowed the RAM to run async with the FSB so FSB=266mhz while RAM=333mhz, you got a very decent 5%ish perf gain from that but IIRC o/c'ing the FSB meant running in sync regardless of RAM used (eg DDR400=PC3200). With cheap nForce2 starting from £40 it makes sense to upgrade if you want perf and esp to o/c or use the latest CPUs. BTW the onboard gfx are awful for gaming, be sure to use the AGP slot.

A7V8X-X is (IIRC) based on the KT400 chipset, decent but only officially 333FSB which isn't ideal. You do get voltage and muliplier control though so should get good results out of TbredB/Barton. TBH have a close look http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-in...quicklinx=2Q7L as nForce2 for £40 is unbelievably cheap. You get 400FSB and only seem to lack Dual Channel ability but that's no big loss on SktA esp considering the price. BTW it's reportedly a Biostar M7NCD nForce2 400. Rem there's a sizable diff between the Rad9600 and the 9600PRO ... get the latter or else I'd suggets getting a GF4TI4200 and save even more cash.

look at the a7n8x-x - it's a single channel version of the asus a7n8x series, and is an excelent spec for the price.
