    Undervolt Your Pentium M Dothan

    I have found this guide on notebookforums.com on how to undervolt your pentium M cpu. It is a fantastic guide and works great.

    My old cpu voltages were:
    600mhz=0.988v
    2ghz=1.340v

    My new lower voltages are:
    600mhz=0.700v
    2ghz=1.100v

    At 600mhz the fan does not come on at all any more (even when at 100%load at 600mhz)

    are things still 100% stable?

    would make you wonder why they are set higher to begin with if they are.

    if you only use ya lappy for web browsing + non intensive activities this could be worth a try.

    Margin of error. Stock assumes the worst possible conditions and still leave leeway for chip variation.

    The default voltage for my Athlon 64 3000+ is 1.5. It runs with 100% stability at stock speed at 1.2 volts.

    Yep everything is 100% stable, my laptop has been running prime95 for ages and rendering in 3d max as well! In fact I am rendering in 3dmax right now. So im pretty chuffed with this.

    It might work with other cpu's as well, im not really sure. I use this method to undervolt due to the dam restrictions in the bios CPU RightMark is a great little proggy though, and its probably safer than bios settings. When I went to 1.068v at full load I got BSOD but because the voltages only change when this program is open I was fine on the next reeboot (no need to reset CMOS - if you even can with laptops).

    Once I knew what voltages my cpu could go down to I selected 'run at startup' so the voltages are always low.

    Hmm....I hope I can find something similar for the P4, a friend of my wife's has a 3GHz Prescott laptop which is a real leg burner

    I bet it's gonna overheat some day. 3 of my silly friend got P4 3Ghz lappy and they all got all sort of probs after ~1 year.

    I think this program will work with Pentium 4 CPUs, they have some kind of speedstep thing dont they? It might also work with cool and quiet amd processors, I'm not sure though.

    Why would you buy a P4 laptop when the centrino ones are so good? they last ages and are mightily thin

    Probably because they didn't ask for my advice before buying. In fairness though, since I put DVD-Shrink on it for them, they probably do benefit from a bit of Netburst goodness now and again.
