How Many of you are/would consider SCSI?

I'd NEVER suggest sharing BOTH SCSI and IDE for long. I use a DVD IDE drive for a few hours if needed then unplug it.

Why have the CPU and MOBO running any devices when the SCSI stuff is being so fast and reliable.

Space...yeah I know its expensive.....but surely thats down to keeping your HDD space situ tidy

I mean, do you REALLY need to have your HDD FULL to its 100gig size on TWO of them?

Surely thats what CD burners are for...storage? I mean..how long does it take to scan disk and defrag those 100 gig drives every week?

and yes...I do defrag once a week

I have always managed with less than 30 gig total....always...and its never even close to full.

id love to have a big scsi array, but i really dont need it, so why waste the money. i agree it is faster, no doubt about it (not sure how it compares to SATA) but when IDE devices are as cheap as they are, and so standard too, then cost simply outweighs the potential benifits for my uses.

yeah...a bit.....BUT as the aforementioned burner READS faster....much faster than an EIDE drive...the total.....*cough* copying time *cough* makes up for it.

and it keep it all SCSI. You can get much faster SCSI burners...but they are, as everyone states...more dough

But lots of people on this forum use top spec mobo with wicked coolers and lovely cases, top money vid cards.....

and then use an archaic HDD and CD system

But dont most people make a image on the HD first due to new copy protections ?

And yes, id love a SCSI setup, but the prices are just too high. IDE is very powerfull and cheap for what it does.

im seriously thinking about getting SCSI as im a graphic design + media student and my XP1600+ system with my Ibm Diskstar XP120 (2mb cache) doesn't cut in anymore. .

Im thinking of going for a 10K 18gb hard drive (for os/photoshop/etc) with 2 X 160 SATA (in raid 0)(for data, etc) system.

Digital video editing is very hard drive intensive, as was the size of datasets I was working with as part of my degree, so I need at least an 80gb hard drive and that's before I start adding my mp3/divx collection.

I must say, I had, very briefly, an old pentium pro compaq server- dual PPro 200s, with a 2Gb x 4 SCSI array....and, my GOD, did Windows 2000 Server boot quick! Amazing!

Do a bootvis optimisation on Windows. My copy boots, after control is passed to the bootloader, in about 5 seconds.

i was considering it a bit, but the cost puts me off. and aren't ide drives generally quieter than scsi... i think if i wanted better performance i might try an ide raid setup... (i currently have a 7,200rpm 8mb cache WD SE as my main boot drive)

Bog standard ata still wins on price/capacity, that's not about to change any time soon either..

/me counts up the cost of a couple hundred gig scsi hdd space (and keeping it in one normal sized pc, and not making a whole heap of noise..) then promptly goes for a quick lie-down....

I would have SCSI as a RAID 0 opetion on my computer and just use it to boot my OS and main programs. Games etc would be on another drive, so my c:\ would only need to be about 20GB to handle all my main progs.

Well, I know SCSI drives are more expensive, but I've been using SCSI drives in my rigs for a good number of years and the scaling property of the controllers are just great.

Additionally, I've been using SCSI RAID5 and RAID1 in my main rig for over a year now and I've no complaints - solid as a rock.
