Discovering why the FSB can't be overclocked

I've just read the ABIT AX8 review, and it got me thinking. If a system won't overclock using FSB adjustments, how can you tell which component (CPU, mobo, RAM, even voltage) is to blame? The system in my sig won't even overclock by 2MHz before complaining; the last time I tried one of the automatic settings (+25%) I had to reset the CMOS!. I'm wondering if cranking up voltage somewhere would help, but I'm wary of stabbing in the dark and frying something.

agp and pci is frequency's are locked before you try and overclock?

If they are what is your memory rated to? If it is pc3200 memory try using a 5:4 divider this should make sure your memory isnt holding you back

The HTT is most liekly to be at fault as they dont like going over 1000Mhz, check in the BIOs and you'll most likely find its set to x5 FSB, as soon as you go over 200Mhz then that immediatly sticks that over 1000Mhz, drop it to x4 and that'll give you upto 250Mhz before you need to adjust it again...

looks like its an athlon xp socket a mate so i shouldnt think that's be a prob. could be the memory not liking faster speeds as said above tho?

Even if the PCI and AGP is not locked, unable to push 2Mhz is ridiculous.

The A7N8X-E isn't the best overclocker from my experience. I only got mine to 210MHz (with an XP-m 2500+) before it kicked up a fuss. I ran the same chip and memory in my DFI LanParty NFII Ultra at 240MHz without any additional cooling!

Try locking the AGP/PCI Frequency as mentioned above and try to get some additional cooling on the Northbridge, see if that helps.

It would help if you could let us know what speeds, volts and cooling you already use.

    CPU Multi
    FSB
Memory Ratio (I think the Asus uses percentages rather than ratio's)
    Volts on CPU and Memory

No it isn't. Without an unlocked pci and agp you will be lucky to get 5mhz over stock speeds.

I'll have a look tonight and post the relevant info. I've also bought a gig of Adata pc3200 today, so I'll stick that in first and see how it goes. It is an XP3200+, the memory is pc3200, not sure about dividers or ratios though.

What I was really after was a discussion of how you can work out which component is holding you back when you can't raise the FSB a significant amount.

Well basically you have to try and isolate which component is holding you back. You can test the motherboard by setting a lower processor divider and setting the RAM to run at a lower multiplier, then cranking the FSB. You can test the Processor by lowering the FSB a bit and increasing the multi. You can test the RAM by setting a higher multiplier than the FSB.

On my Epox NForce2 board it seems that my problem is that the memory controller can't easily cope with 1GB of RAM. I plan to try a 2T (CPC off) bios to see if that helps.

He stated Abit AX8 which is a S939 board, must admit I quickly scanned over the original post and replied specifically to those type of boards...

I've had numerous motherboards without a PCI/AGP lock that did not become unstable until the OC reached 10%+.

Anyway the nforce2 (actually all the nforce chipsets) chipset has a PCI bus locked at 33.3Mhz regardless of what the AGP (or PCI-E) bus is at. Most also lock the AGP bus by default, but I am not certain about that specific asus board.

I would try manually setting the AGP to 67MHz and upping the memory voltage. See if that changes anything.
