Why does defragging take so long??
Surely with larger and larger hdds someone would come up with a better solution?
I've been defragging 149GB (160GB) for 7 hours now

That's the problem... more data to defrag, and that data has to be moved from one physical location on disk to another. So even if disks get faster, because they hold more data, defragging still takes a while.
Of course, the longer you leave it, the longer it takes, so do it regularly.
I do mine about once every other weel in diskeeper on the same sized drive as yours it takes about 15mins
7 hours seem an aweful long time.
done my 300gb one in 30 mins last nite.
It also depends how much data is on the drive. If its nearly full (80%+ full) then its going to take longer because defrag has less space to work with
Not as bad as my sisters, 13GB drive on a Pentium II 450Mhz
if u have a 2ndary partition/hdd filled with data [ie songs, movies, pics....], defragging shoudnt take too long
7 hours is awfully fast IMOH, it took me 12 days 21 hours 13 minutes 22 seconds to defrag my 480GB partition on a 4disks raid5 (with 15% free space). It was heavily fragmented though.

12.5 days constant?
That's why I bought Diskeeper 8.
$19.95 (£10.43) for home user edition #9 and you never have to manually defrag again. There's the usual free trial so check it out.
Just use the "set it and forget" it function to defrag when the screen saver comes on and bob's your uncle, a perfectly defragged machine everytime you use it.
I'm sure there are other pieces of software on the market free or otherwise but I haven't bothered to look.

I use diskeeper 9 and I can defrag the 3 partitions of my 160gig spinpoint in about 2 minutes (I run it at least once a day).
well I reached 85% at 11hours... I guess I should defrag more often.
Are there any figures about as to how much faster a freshly defragged disk is compared to one that hsant for a a year/month/week etc?
