    Compare

    Laptops:

    Number 1

    Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4ghz
    1MB L2 Cache
    1 Gig DDR SD RAM (2x 512)
    80Gig 5400rpm HD
128MB ATI Radeon Mobile Express 200...??? (Dedicated)
    DVD+/- W/RW CD-RW Combo Dual Layer

    Around $1700

    Number 2

    Athlon 64 3700+
    1MB L2 cache
    1.0GB PC2700 DDR SoDIMM
    100.0GB hard drive
ATI Mobility RADEON 9550 graphics with 64MB video memory; S-video TV-out
Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support

    $1,549.99 (+ tax, I think at 7.5%)

Not the greatest difference but the second one's stock and the first one's built a la carte!

Also, does anyone have a clue what the options are on extra batteries etc.?

Video production and some audio also.

Maybe the odd DVD but that's miscellaneous.

Would not want to go much above that 1700. US Dollars that is.

Well, what you want relys on the CPU so the first one. Mabe you should consider a pentium for editing as they are better. Personally I like pentium Ms. I must say though, that price seems very cheap for the spec.

Hmmm, what about spare batteries, I'm not really in the laptop realm much, are there any big ones out there, or pretty much the same across the board?

If it's mainly for encoding, go for a P4. P-Ms are cool and use less power, put aren't as good as P4s for encoding due to, amongst other things, its short pipeline.

A64s seem to be better at encoding than P-Ms, but still not as good as P4s

Number one is via Circuit City and will be built as we choose, number two is one from Best Buy, pre-made.

My brother will be making use of it, he does a lot of video production - from commercials to humorous short movies.
