Question Which socket A processor should I buy?

Hey all. To start, I have around $110-120 to spend on a new processor. I never overclock, so buying a cheaper versetile processor to overclock is out of the question lol anyways though... With my computer setup can you guys show me a pretty speedy processor that will work really smooth with my set up?

    I'm running a
    NF7-S v.2 mobo
    1GB 3200 Corsair Memory
getting brand new 60GB 7200rpm 8mb cache Hard drive
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Vid Card

I'm pretty sure that's all the info ya guys need right?

Well anyways thanks for alway's being there to help guys!

I think most people would suggest a 2500+ Barton, if you can find the right week. You may find higher for your money now, but these are supposed to be the best bang for your buck (says the guy who splurged on a 3200+ that won't go anywhere )

You don't say what processor you're using now though.

The problem now is that all the processors are (multiplier) locked, however they are still great processors.

I have a Barton 2500+, and put the FSB to 200MHz, and dropped the multiplier to 10, to give me a nice 2Ghz at stock volts, I bought mine before they were locked.

But yes the best one to go for are the bartons, they give the best performance due to their larger cache. But for best price performance the 2500+ is great if you want decent stock performance go for the 3200+.

In your situation i would try and get the 3200+, i don't know the exact prices over there, look at newegg or similar

Sorry, I am using a 2400XP. Oh and yes, NO overclocking for me what so ever.

Edit: When I was looking through some 3200XP's on www.pricewatch.com, I saw two different types. A 266fsb which was MORE expensive and the other was a 333fsb. Wouldnt I rather want the 333fsb considering my 3200 style memory? Or if you guys would like to just give me the exact same link to one that would be way hepful to lol

    Thanks guys!

Overclock the processor you have now before you buy anything else. The 2400 only uses a 133MHz bus, for a start. Go into the bios and make a note of your settings. Change the multiplier from 15 to 10.5 and see if it works. If it does, set the FSB to 200MHz, this will get the memory running at the speed it's rated for, and give you a speed bost to 2100MHz. If it doesn't work, set the multiplier to 12.5 and the FSB to 166, this will still give you a boost. Try it, tell us how you get on, and then we'll help you out if you need any more help.

Disclaimer: you may have to clear the cmos at some point, and overclocking is never risk free. I've done loads of silly overclocks though and never killed anything, but it's at your own risk.

See I would not want to do that with my processor now because i'm just going to put it into my other pretty good computer. Doesnt overclocking take a LOT of time though? Dont I have to like go Just a LITTLE then wait a few hours and do the same? If so what's the actual way to do it? Like how much should I go up by each time and where should it stop considering i'm going to use a stock fan.

    Look at this... http://www.intropc.com/compatibility...rd=CPU_AMD3200

Now since my memory is 3200 type, doesnt that mean it only runs at 333fsb? With a 400fsb cpu would that be bad, or would it just act like it had a 333fsb because of the memory?

PC3200 = 400MHz. The RAM is fine. Personally I don't inch up a little at a time when I'm overclocking because I'm impatient, I jack it up until I can't post, then clear CMOS and go down from there until I'm 100% stable. Risky? slightly. Time saving? Definitely.

IF you get a 2500+ then it's most probable that if you have pc3200 ram, then you can just bump the vcore up a tiny bit and then try and change the fsb upto 400 from 333. This will give you a really good increase of speed equivalent of a 3200+ saving you a lot. This little trick doesn't require must expertise and is nearly 100% safe. John.

I have a 2500+ that runs at 3200+ quite happily, with only a tiny voltage increase - although the computer does have a decent PSU, which will go a long way to your overclocking.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
