Can someone please clear up for me the main differences between the above three CPUs? Information on performance differences would be really useful
Also I've heard motherboards will not support Venice/San Diego cores out of the box, is that true even if I were to buy a motherboard within the next few weeks?

Winchester is the old type so dont get that. Venice is the new core. San Diego is Venice but with 1mb of cache.
New motherboards are likely to not work with these without a bios upgrade.

Winchester = Old, and poor overclocker.
Newcastle = Above.
Clawhammer = Old San Diego style chip with 1mb cache.
Venice = New stepping, SSE3, new memory controller, lower voltage, better overclocker, 512k l2 cache.
San Diego = Above, 1mb l2 cache, better at gaming/multi-threading, supposedly better at multi-tasking when it comes of age, cheaper.
IMO
1st = San Diego.
2nd = Venice.

Woah there! That's just so wrong. Winnies can be great overclockers. Granted, some of them have been a bit poor, but a lot of give people fantastic clocks. Still, the newer cores are proving rather juicy.Originally Posted by ozzyo99

The Winchester's run a bit cooler than the others at the same speed, which is why am looking at one for my new silent-as-possible build.
Winchesters arnt all that old and the newer ones do overclock pretty well, so I wouldnt disregard them but if your buying a new CPU, venice or san diega is definutly the way to go it seems

I thought is the other way around, since Venice/San Diego has improved power output.

I just did another search and found tests going both ways - so I guess the change is fairly small. May as well get the new stuff.
If the change is fairly small, the price isnt, I've contacted the guy Im making a PC for (my Dads friend) to let him know about the differences and I'll see what he thinks
the main difference in my opion is the improved memory controller, where the venice and san diego cores can run 4 double sided dimms at full speed, whereas the winchester pays a speed penalty as the 4th dimm causes the ram to run a 333mhz.
so if you want a cheaper chip and dont plan on using more than 2 dimms, then the winchester is still a good bet. it also runs a couple of degrees cooler, and will give you potentially less compability problems.
as for the SSE3 extensions, test have shown these to make little or no difference in performance, particularly as only few applications support it.
the san diego and venice are the better chips, but it comes down to what you want, and if you want to save money now that the winchesters are going cheap to make way for the new chips
