You don't need a spare CPU, just download the motherboards latest BIOS to a floppy prior to ripping your old rig apart and boot from the floppy by holding ALT+F2 prior to and after powering up, your PC will boot using the latest BIOS then you just need to flash it using the desired program from your manufacturer.
DFI is currently the market leader i would suggest, although Abit for me are a favourite.
and if I don't have a floppy drive?! lol
then you're a bit hopeful - you still pretty much need a floppy drive, for things like bios updates or isntalling windows onto a sata driveQuote:

I can easily get a floppy drive was just hoping it wasn't necessary.
Would cost you around £4, i know what you mean i hate the ugly, loud, slow (almost useless) things but its times when my SD didn't boot that i was glad i hadn't thrown it away :)
However its about time that you could boot from a USB stick given that most BIOS have USB emulation for mice/keyboards these days.
DFI NF4 Ultra D.
I'm quite a fan of the Asus A8N SLi Deluxe edition myself.
dfi ultra-d and just get a floppy drive.
Can't you hot flash your present mainboard? once it's running, change round with the other BIOS chip and flash what you like on it. BIOS chips are like fiddly memory cards, always look out for spare BIOS chips. checkout a hot flashing guide.
Unless you get lucky and can find a motherboard with the latest BIOS already installed you will have to flash it, or wait until you can find a new one.
Just do what i do if you dont like the look of a floppy drive etc. Get one, cheap as you can and just plug it in when you want it. No need to remove front bezels etc, just have it hanging out of the side
You dont need a floppy drive to install win xp on a SATA drive............you may do with an original XP cd but with any new one including sp2 it will pick i tup for ya :D Just a hint!
DFI :D love mine!
Nox
which dfi you got - im tempted with them ;D
Me too :)Quote:

an official answer to the question, albeit on an obscure board with purple connectorsQuote:
Dear Sir:
I have checked and usage of this CPU type should not present a problem
as the internal architecure of the CPU is still .09nm as well as a having a
standard core voltage of 1.4v

Subject: Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 CPU Compatability
Does the SL-K890Pro-939 support new Venice-core AMD Athlon 64
Processors? The compatability tables on the Soltek website mention San
Diego (Venice with 1Mb cache), but not regular Venice chips.
