VIA MII-12000 Passive Cooling

I was considering adding a passive cooling solution to my VIA MII-12000 board.

I understand that some people have used the Zalman Flower Cooler (or something). From the link below, does anyone knw which cooler would work on this board? I thought is was the last one in the list but it also says that it only fits on CPU's which are socketed and not soldered onto the board.

Also, do you think that a Zalman ZM-NB47J heatsink on its own on a VIA M2-12000 CPU would be sufficient? It might be used in a Morex 3677 case.

Any thoughts?

I don't think the 47J is rated for anything higher than 800MHz so I wouldn't risk it. A flower cooler should be enough providing you have some case air movement...

I use the AMD copper flower cooler by Zalman, but I don't know if you can still get it - it was for the Socket A CPUs.

Joshwa,

Would you mind having a look at the link on the opening post? If you look at the last item on that page - is that the Copper Flower cooler by Zalman which would work on the VIA (i.e. the one you used)?

I just need confirmation that that is the one.

it looks very similar - although the one i use is all copper. socket 370 was very similar to socket a so i don't see why this wouldn't fit on the m2-12000 but i can't garantee it - they may be saying that it doesn't work with soldered ones because there's no way to hold the heatsink onto the cpu - i simply use thermal paste and the weight of the heatsink holds it in place.

Are you not concerned with the heatsink not being held down other than from its on weight? I would be a little scared. Also, I was hoping to use the case vertically. I guess the heatsink would fall off!!

What kind of temperatures do you get under load with your heatsink? Do you have a case fan?

i've got a pabst / or panaflo 20dba 80mm fan at the back of the PSU that takes air out of the case, it's practically silent.

i don't run the computer at full load , but when i did the temps were around 66C, hence why i don't run it at full load :)

the heatsink is very heavy and the thermal paste does a good job of sticking it on - you could get a sticky thermal pad or something similar and stick it on more forcefully but i'm not sure i'd recommend having the system vertically as the heatsink i've got is very heavy.
