I have got myself a new optical mouse but in games it appears to be a little skittish and will just go where it wants any ideas why this is

try it on a different surface.. red = aviod. same with glass.. best is either wood, non-red/clear plastic or some kind of optical-designed mouse mat

Could be a dodgy mouse mat?

A longer shot, can you set the resolution that the mouse sees, the dots per inch?

The make of the mouse and the OS you are using might help someone find the solution.

opticals afaik cant be chaneged, programmed in the firmware in it... wot mouse is it btw?

    turn off windows mouse accelleration
    exit/uninstall any mouse utility/driver apps
adjust the sensiitivty till its how u like it
stick some mouseskatz on the bottom of mouse
also turn off hardware cursors for ur gfx card (wont affect the mouse, but makes higher/smoother fps in dx games)

The MX700 improved my UT2003 performane no end. I'd recommend them to anyone.
They're also damn sexy and seem to fit the shape of my hand perfectly
