    hdd silencer

On the scan forum someone was asking about quietening their spinpoint. Someone recommended this . I have a spinpoint and would like to cut down the constant humming, so do you think it's worth getting one of these? It sounds like a good idea but i don't know how they work in practice.

Guess, as it says, it goes into 5.25 bay and then you just put your hdd inside it?

Cheers for any info (oh and if anyone wants to recommend a better one, go for it)

Those are very good. With one of them you shouldn't be able to hear the HD above even the quietest fans.

I have one for my rather noisy Raptor and it has really made an improvement whilst keeping drive temperature surprisingly low. It would be ideal to completely silence a Samsung drive and I'm certain you would be pleased with the results.

The unit is easy to fit and suits both SATA and PATA disks. It then fits in a spare 5.25" bay. The only downside is that if your case uses drive rails it may not fit properly. In my Antec Sonata I have placed it on some rubber damping rings ontop of an optical drive. The unit isn't fixed but then I never move it far - especially as I have a Zalman Watercooler (Reserator) and an unbelievable amount of cables!

I looked extensively at hard drive silencers and read many reviews before buying. The SilentMaxx unit is worth considering but I think that the QuietBox you mentioned is the best.

I was surprised reading your thread that you were annoyed by the noise of your drive as Samsung units are supposed to be the best for noise (or lack of!). However this would definately solve your problem. Other people have approached the issue of noise in many other ways including susending the drive in a 5.25" bay using elastic! Sounds wierd but the cause of noise in your case may well be down to vibration alone.

For lots of information have a look at the excellent http://www.silentpcreview.com/

    Happy modding!

Cotswoldcs, the newer Samsungs, especially the P80 aren't as quiet as the older ones from personal experience as well as what I've read on SPCR.

One of the guys on SPCR forums did a review of a number of enclosures and I think he said the Scythe one is the best.

    Thanks guys.

Actually cotswoldcs, the noise isn't that bad, but its the constant hum and vibration that annoy me, as well as when its reading, the scratchy sound. I thought about some of those rubber "grommits"(right word?) but my case is Akasa Mirage-62 and the hard drive is flush against the sides so i don't think they would fit. (Assuming grommits work how i imagine they would)

    Thanks again,

    Thanks again,
If you haven't already ordered, I can email you a pic of how I've suspended a hard disk in the Eclipse case. Suspending gets rid of vibration. Can even send you a few (free) plastic clips, maybe some elastic as well.

Any chance of seeing these pics as well? That sounds very interesting.

Will take pics - hopefully tonight.

Will have to figure out how to post pics here first though or email them.

Found a link to the exact method I copied.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article109-page1.html - I removed the hard disk cage from the case.

I'm using one drive now but when I had two I used a cable tie to underneath the white plastic clips of the top drive. The cable tie was too big to fit through the hole so it didn't slip down.

Will still try to get pics of my setup.

If anyone needs the plastic clips (may have a bit of round elastic as well), I can post some to you. I bought a bag from Maplin and most are gathering dust.

Picture of the HD suspension in an Akasa Eclipse

Just like the link posted above (post 9), I've used the base of a broken floppy drive. Round elastic from a local shop - £2 for loads. Plastic clips from Maplin (have to use a particular size I think) - if anyone wants a few, just ask.

I think it's possible to use elastic and mount the HD in one of th 5.25 bays. May be able to get a link to similar mounting from SilentPCReview.
