Noob PC Build-Would this bundle be better than i have?

Hi Forgive me if i seem green at this! Because i am. So i welcome any tips on where i am going wrong,or if you can advise me on a better set up! Appreciate all your kind help!

I want to build a new pc and sell the one i have as to recoup some cash back that i'll be borrowing for this project!! As its my first attempt what i want to do is not go to mad on buying the top components but get something obviously faster than i already have, and then after that when i am positively sure in myself i will build a faster machine. So what i was thinking of getting was a pci-e Mobo as its more futureproof, but i will have to sell my 6800le (which OC'd to 16-1) which is a bit of a bummer, but still!Anyway this is what i was looking at http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?MBB-643051

Do you think this will be better than my Pc (specs in Sig) I was also thinking of swaping my old Audigy 2 sound card as the old mobo has onboard sound. And taking out the 1x512 stick and add it to the new set up, it will still leave the 2x256's which should be fine!eek: Or is that going to far do you think?
Ps i have a Liteon cd/rw 52x and a Radeon 9000 pro 128mb and various other things that i could add to old pc!

It will be faster, without doubt, but I don't think you'll notice that much difference tbh.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

As Nox said, a bit faster as stock, but with a bit of OC'ing you will see a difference. Whats the machine going to be used for? That way we can help you out easier!

Avoid socket 754, it doesn't support Dual Channel RAM, has not got PCI express, and its not futureproof> Socket 939 is what AMD are (and will be) using for desktop CPUs, you should go for that, with the nForce4 chipset. For a noticable performance boost, have a look for something similar to this: http://komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=108498&cks=SPK

(That actual kit would be fine, but the BH-5 ram with the Epox motherboard seems a slightly odd choice: AFAIK the Epok doesn't have particularly high VDimm options)

There is nothing wrong with S754, and if you want the most cost effective upgrade it would be a great choice especially if you want to keep your old video and sound cards. Don't buy S939 until you want to upgrade everything. Generally, when you mix technologies (old and new) you get bad results.

BTW: That Athlon 64 will be much faster (in games especially) than your P4 at almost everything. I say, go for it!

ditto, id go for the s754 bargin. yeah 939 is better and futureproof, but then you might as well do it properly and get new gfx and why bother when you got powerful and bargin graphics already, this is a much cheaper route which will keep you happy for a while.

edit: and leave the 1*512 stick in as its pc3200 not the 2*256's

But BUFF...it cannot be. What about futureproofing??? Oh my God, what will we do now?

I've said it time and time again but people just don't listen. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FUTUREPROOF COMPUTERS!!!

Buy what you need when you need it (unless your crystal balls are a lot better than mine). A computer is not an investment, it's a tool. If it does the job what do you care if they come out with a better one tomorrow?

I always say.......once you have built or brought a pc, by the time you have installed everything and had it running for a week, its then out of date again!!!

Actually you can get PCI-E for Socket 754 ... but the boards are fairly scarce....

Hi Thanks for a great response!

As i said in my earlier post as this first build will be a bit of a experiment and i don't want to go the whole hog and buy all new stuff just yet, so i will mix some of my old components in with the new Board and try to make some cash on whats left. I noticed your split on what i should go for (939 or 754) but i think i will go for the 754 and wait to see how it pans out with the cpu's! You never know something else may come out! Then i will have enough saved to buy all new components. By the way my budget is only about £300 now! But when i sell my old set up i will have a bit extra to spend! By the way is it cost effective to buy the Cpu already attatched to the Mobo,or is it better to buy seperate? And my last Qs,can you recommend some cooling and a nice Case thats easy for a noob (with hands like 'A Bunch of Nana's') to have easy access when fitting the Components! as I am very clumsy!

Ps i think ive made a 'Rick' i recently brought a 200gb Maxtor D/Max 10 ATA/133,and as thats IDE will that go with the 754 Board? (Purchased as it was really cheap @ £38)
