    15krpm disks

Anyone got/used one of these (or more?)
Interested in particular if anyone has comparisons between the different makes - hgst, maxtor, seagate.
In particular WRT performance and noise level (especially idle noise).

Thinking to buy a new one, probably 36GB, torn as to which to buy. On paper the maxtor atlas II looks best, the max transfer is a bit below the cheetah 15k.4 but the access time is the best of the bunch.

Seagate seems to be cheaper (and lots of refurbs out there). You may want to check out Fujitsus, they make great disks too.

I have Seagate 15K U320 disks, to be honest, in desktop usage, I don't notice the difference between them & my sata disks

Can you not just rma it, those suckers have a 5 year direct to manufactuer warranty on them.

When mine died Seagate/DHL screwed up & it apparently got lost in transit, so they sent me another which turned out to be a 73gig disk instead of 18g, then 2 weeks later the original 18g replacement turned up so I effectively got a 73g U320 disk for free.

More than 5 years old I think. And warranty well voided in any event.

Just check on the Seagate site to see if it's still in warranty, all you do is enter some numbers which are on the disk. You dont need a receipt or anything like that & as for voiding the warranty, they didn't ask how I killed mine (water leak) so I didn't tell them.

I've had a few Fujitsus. One died (I moved the PC before it span down fully) another is still running well but whines sometimes, & my newest is fine & is fairly quiet.
I'm doing a comparison with raptors, but haven't moved the OS onto the SCSI for testing, so all I have right now is HDTach charts:

    Fujitsu MAS3367NC 15K U320 SCSI on Adaptec 29160LP controller:

    Sata WD Raptor 36GB SATA:

    Sata WD Raptor 72GB SATA:

Oh, and Sandra Drive Index for the Fujitsu (top, 68MB/s):

I removed the "warranty void if removed" sticker, which also contains the numbers I'd need to type in. No warranty for me. :/

Nice graphs - the scsi is a fair bit quicker there (especially seeks).

    From storagereview:
"What we do know, however, is that the title of "World's Fastest Hard Drive" has finally been wrested away from the Fujitsu MAS3735 and now lies with Maxtor's Atlas 15K II."

That's definitely looking like the favourite now.

from expereince you'll only see the benifit of these disks in larger arrarys where data is in constant usage.

All the stats in the world won't stop bottlenecks in the limitation of your motherboard or adaptor to these disks.

these sort of disks only really work well in high end kit with good backplanes and a fast ultra wide or fiber interface.
    It is Inevitable.....

Well I have a u160 adapater, and u160 exceeds the speed of *any* drive on the market by a reasonable margin still. Even the atlas 15k2 can't break 100MB/s sustained. PCI bus might be a bit of a limit, but there's nothing else on it so it should be ok.

Besides which I ran scsi before and it was pleasantly fast to work with - especially when hammering the disk.

Never mind the throughput, look at the access times.
15K=reduced latency, all the time, every time, whether RAIDed or not, whether multiple drives or not.
There's no substitute for raw speed.

Ordered the maxtor - was basiclly a toss up between that and the fujitsu as I wanted a FDB drive for the quieter running. Maxtor is more available though, and damn fast.
