    Dothan Lovin

Well it was the time of the month, thought id upgrade my AMD XP media centre rig, picked up a Dothan from ocuk forums, worked out to be about £55, A 2mb L2, 1.5Ghz.

Anyway got the rest of the kit the other day and decided to give it a whirl.
got the memory upto 180 4:5 (auto) and the v-core upped to 1.5625v
had a whril with my x800pro @ 533/533, 03 gave me 12700marks but i hadnt saved it unfortunatly. (sold the card the other day)
Note these are air cooling clocks and running virtually silent.
however i will be doing some fine tuning in the next few days, the multiplier is unlocked so i will be dropping it down and upping the memory if i can, (using 2x1gb sticks so might be a challenge) aiming for 25sec pi =)

will add some water soon, but at this rate / initial testings it will be bettering my main rig

Cool... Not bad at all. Got a Banias in my HTPC but that tops out at 1.8GHz (though that's with default volts - made a couple of botched attempts to pin mod it for higher voltage but gave up before I bent the pins beyond repair).

that's impressive man! looks like dothan and K8 give roughly the same performance clock for clock innit? (based on the sandra scores)

what mobo do you use mate? s479 or using adapter?

I think they're a little quicker than a K8 clock for clock. They just can't clock as high.

Im sure itll go faster on water tho and a bit more juice, but nice setup

If a 1.5 goes to 2.7, Im sure a 2.0 would be breaking some records, or be coming close

They are not easy to overclock. They can't get close to the clocks on the fastest K8's, so no records anytime soon. They are however very very fast for their clocks.

Sorry Rave, but this is the air-cooled WR: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8546172

Also, I never said it was impossible, just difficult to overclock compared to A64's and P4's. The overclocks you linked to are the best in the world using liquid nitrogen while inside an air-conditioned insulated box using chips you cannot buy.

You have a problem my friend. I'd appreciate it if you got professional help. You are obviously in need of it.

Difficult to overclock due to the format, but with the 489 pin convertor for good clockin boards, theres not really that many a problems i spose

Most of the problems stem from the fact that:

    1) Not many people have them, and
    2) 2MB cache, and
    3) They were not meant for desktop enthusiasts, but as laptop chips.

I'd like to see Intel expand on the Dothan further. They need to get away from the P4 high MHz BS story and concentrate on a real performance chip like Dothan and A64.

actually your wrong there, its not difficult to clock at all, there is a variety of ways to overclock dothans (bios fsb, windows fsb, multiplier), ive not seen a dothan that can not get at least 2.4Ghz on air, macci from XE shows a 2.8Ghz on a standard heatsink on air and his x800XT @ 660/660 on air got him over 37700 01 marks.

The so called link you have provided is comparing a Highly expensive cpu/memory/graphics card volt modded, not to mention noisey, comparing to a cheap SUPERIOR dothan rig

    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8567747

besides, its ashame your HIGHLY clocked 3.261Ghz fx55 rig cant even keep up with an air cooled 2.8Ghz dothan rig

... back on topic, i decided to hook the reserator to the dothan, and its sitting here idle, between 19-22 degrees, just waiting for some decent memory before i clock some more

Nice one Pingu (both the overclock and the slap down )...

Just got myself a Dothan Celeron (1.3GHz, 1MB cache - 350J i.e. C0 stepping!) to replace my Banias Pentium M (also 1.3GHz, 1MB cache). Haven't had a serious go at overclocking it yet - but it does 2275MHz (13 * 175) at default volts (1.26V) no problem... Need more volts to take it further I think. The Banias did 1800MHz top (10 x 180) but would bomb out around 185MHz so I'm fairly confident it's not the mobo or RAM holding me back at 175MHz. This is all in my AOpen i855 board. Have got a 2nd hand P4P800-VM on the way and once that's tested and flashed with a compatible BIOS I'm going to get a CT-479 and see what I can do (shooting for 13 x 200)... Looser RAM timings and higher VDIMM ought to help (the i855 only goes to 2.5-3-3-7 / 2.6V without modding / using a booster). I'll probably have another go at pin modding it before then (can't manage to actually wrap the pins on the CPU - they're just too close together for my eyes / hands to deal with so going to try the 'U' in the socket method but wanted to just try it out last night and see how far I could get it)

The difficulty is only relative to A64 and P4 systems. I believe I already said that. I did not say it couldn't be done.

3261MHz is hardly a high overclock on an FX-55. 3600MHz+ 3D stable is done quite often, especially by guys like Macci. If you think Macci couldn't destroy that score with my rig then you don't know Macci and you don't know anything about overclocking.

Show me a Dothan at the top of the ORB and then you can make a case for it. Until then it's all smoke.

But whats the % of people using Dothans compared to FX-55's?

There is no denying that Dothans, clock for clock, are the fastest chips on the planet.

At some benchmarks yes, but the FX-55 is still the absolute overall champion.

I'm testing the San Diegos and they look promising. May be faster than the FX-55 clock for clock but not sure they can hit the speeds of the FX. I need an FX-57!
