it is not an easy thing to say 'the best hdd manufacturer', but generally, seagate makes drives that are more reliable and quiter than the others. the bad thing is that they're slower too.
id avoid current maxtor drives, theyre reliability are questionable. it was known that even dell dumped maxtor as their hdd supplier because of these high failure rates. these drives that were manufactured for dell eventually made it into the market i think

Overall the WD's are best. You really have to define "best" if you are not speaking in an overall sense. Currently, considering speed, reliability, warranty policies, noise, price and availablity, Western Digital offers the best drives overall. They are not cheap but reasonable all things considered.

I do like a lot of Seagate's stuff as well. You can have Samsung's HD's. They are cheap but I've had very little luck with them.

    So there you go jackass.

I have a pair of Samsung 160gb IDEs... Never had any problems, however, to my knowledge Seagate and WD make the best hard drives.

Samsung brings it all together in perfect form for me , like the look, like the silent operation, so far reliable

I do also own a Seagate that i'm not so happy with, design is lesser and it makes strange noises on it's own.

I managed to get a 200GB finally, exact same solid performance as the 160GB.

I suppose that's samsung's only flaw, the lack of bigger drives. IDE only goes up to 200

First SATA or IDE? I would go for Seagate overall bu if you want hush then you cant go wrong with a samsung spinpoint. You may as well go 200Gb for a couple of quid (starts to cost more extra after that). Remember thats the best for you. The best, IMO, SATA drive is the WD 74GB Raptor.

Who keeps a drive for 5 years? Certainly nobody who cares about their data.

Its swings and roundabouts; each has a good bit which is then negated by something else.

    I personally prefer WD/Seagate drives

i've got two maxtor 200gb Diamondmax Plus 10 SATA NCQ (RAID 0) quite cheap from scan, but they take forever to boot. I've had all IBM/hatachi before and boot times with them were 30s-45s (obviously depends on what you've got loading up etc.). I've had one IBM go funny - might be a bad sector but it's old 60GB. All are as noisy as each other for me but i don't really care about the noise. I think reliability these days are much better than in the past - when i get another drive it'll be price, performance and most probably an IBM. But that's from experience

Well I have a whole hybrid of drives at home

In the isotope gaming rig, I have a couple of Western Digital 74 Gb Raptor Drives and these are great for gaming systems as they fly though the data thanks to their 10,000 RPM rotational speeds.

My other drives in the main MCE/Gaming mark 2 system are seagate and maxtor - both SATA but the maxtor have 16 Mb caches which is another plus for them.

Its all really down to what you want from the drive as to which you get really.

Seagate's are nice due to their 5 yr warranties and the maxtors are good at transfers due to their caches.
