Dual Channel with 3rd stick in mobo???

i have just bought some "GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 (GE1GB3200BHDC) (MY-005-GL)" and i already have a stick of "Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200LL Low Latency Pro CAS2 (MY-028-CS)" my question is:
Can i still run the GeIL in dual channel mode while having the Corsair in the remaining non dual-channel slot????if not why...

    cheers people

I've been away from the hardware scene for too long, but i know for nForce2 boards the below is true:

"you are required to run an equal amount of memory on each channel for dual channel mode to work, 1GB on one channel and 512MB on the remaining channel will result in a machine running single channel".

I'm not sure if the same is true for nForce3/4 and Intel based chipsets.

it will be extremely hard to run all the ram @ DDR400. even with the new nforce 4 and sand diago or venic A64 cores, running 4 sticks of ram poeple can only achieve DDR400+ with 2T rate. likelihood is that your system will be running at DDR333 @ dual channel

however if you have a socket 754 board then it doesn;t matter as the ram slots are in single channel config. so not problems

    Yes

(assuming you have the capabilities to run dual channel)

K0nigen not exactlyu true there. only socket 754 are not dual channel support due to the fact that newcastle and clawhammer cores don;t have dual channel memory controller inside the cpus. whereby nforce 2 and KT400 etc chipsets for socket A motherboards offer dual channel support via southbridge not not cpu. so Athlon, Duron, Sempron XPs can enjoy the joy of dual channel.

then again, as i said if your ram slos are been cramped with ram. then you can still run in dual channel mode (on nforce 2 you have to have single sided ram, so if you bought geil and corsair, then you CAN'T have dual channel.) but in severly lowered FSB and no overclocking abilities whatso ever as the FSB won't budge further than 166 or 333dual channel

If this is a Nforce 2 mobo if you put the 2 Geil sticks in the dual channel slots and the other one in the other slot it should work dual channel

That's not actually true - in most cases what happens is that you end up with 512Mb on each memory channel in dual channel & the remaining 512Mb on the channel with 1Gb runs at a lower rate.

Plenty of people have had nForce2 boards running with 3 sticks of RAM.
Tbh I doubt that you will see much improvement from 1Mb to 1.5Mb unless you are using something like Photoshop that will use all the RAM it can get.

It would help if you mentioned which particular mobo so that we knew what chipset you are using ...

Firstly you will get more performance from the extra stick, than the small increase dual channel gives.

Some motherboards can run dual with in-equal quantitys on each channel. It depends how the dual channel on the mobo is implemented as there are several ways.
On my nf7-s I have had no problem getting dual channel with 3 sticks.

Currently I am using 4x 512mb sticks (2x BH-5, 2x TCCD, both corsair) in dual channel on my DFI Ultra-D. For this I need to use 2T command rate, but I can however run it at 2-2-2-7 at 240+mhz and Ive not really tested it much...
Games like everquest2 run great with 2gb

Most recent games will bennifit from 1.5/2gb of ram and certiannly all new games will.. I expect unreal3, stalker, fear.. etc.. will all like to run on 2gb...

We obviously differ in our opinions - none of the games that I have played showed any significant improvement with 1.5Mb over 1.0Mb.

my abit nf7 (nforce 2 also) runs fine in dual channel with 2x256 SINGLE sided twinmos and a 512 crucial in the other slot.

worth a try, tho as stated above the dual modules may need to be single sided
