Would there be a problem with running a 5.25" drive from a 3.5" external enclosure?

Other than it won't fit and would look knocked together, is there any reason it won't work should i have to?

I can think of four potential pitfalls:
The IDE cable will probably not be long enough.
The power may be insufficient, amd even if the enclosure uses external power, it might not be enough to power a DVD writer.
The enclosure may have issues with ATAPI devices (Meaning, all optical drives).
The writer might not work without drivers for running it externally.

    I personally wouldn't chance it.

You can unscrew the PCB from the enclosure and just plug into your 5.25" device. My converter board is exposed now and the DVDRW just sit on my desk (nothing covering it, just bare). It works perfectly.

Ok, i'll try it sometime. Its not something i need right now, but when dual layer gets cheaper and i eventually want to use lightscribe i'll need an external writer.

If it doesnt work, could there be any damage to components?

depends how you handle them, but generally I wouldn't think so - just be sensible and careful.

Lightscribe is pretty cool - my wife has the HP one in her PC - its been great for popping out some good looking wedding CD's but you can't get blank lightscribe DVDs yet (please prove me wrong!! We need some!!)
