    HELP!!! high-end kit failure :S

    ok, bit urgent this..

    we've got a few servers where i work, compaq prolient DL380s (g2 chassis), which arent that new but are expensive. they each have an onboard raid card. 3 of em are working fine, but i rebooted the 4th and it didn't see the hdd controller.. which is onboard. i've tried the following things..

    rebooting multiple times, with and without hard drives/other drives attatched
    disabled all other pci devices
    changed irq settings
    reflashed the machine bios with an updated one
    reflashed the raid bios - failed because it couldnt see the raid card.

    the irq is displayed in the bios setup, but i believe this might only be because its onboard, the machine knows it should be there..

    any ideas for solutions at all?

    do a clear cmos is my only suggestion mate - sounds like its cream crackered.

    rememebr it was fine, you rebooted (changed nothing) and its now now fine. I assume you're not even getting the <<press crtl-whatever>> message to get into the raid setup? Btw a similar thing happens if you enable i20 setting on an LSI megaraid and your mobo doesn't support i20

    I remember an onboard SCSI controller dieing in a server... that was it... new mobo required

    I'd suggest grabbing the latest BIOS for the mobo/RAID controller if you can and flashing it if that's possible. That's about the only thing I can think of.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    some of those raid controllers have battery backed memory - is it worth changing the battery ?

    If everything is enabled in the BIOS that's supposed to be then your controller is probably dead. How about buying a PCI RAID card?

    What make was the onboard raid? adaptec? lsi logic? and do you have a backup of the data? I actually have a LSI Logic Megaraid 320-2 raid card for sale at the moment if by some miracle that was the type it had onboard.

    it was some compaq jobbie. the data itself isnt important, but i dont think i'd be able to wire up the hard drives to anything else, its all onboard..

    plugging one into a PCI/PCI-X should work OK, you would just need to disconnect it from the (most likely) 68pin on board connector and plug it into the one on the card. You just have to make sure you replace an LVD controller with a LVD controller if that is the case... Though it could be fibre channel, or anything...

    I don't think compaq make raid controllers, our compaqs at work have adaptec chips on them, but these things are 5+ years old so they may be using another brands chips by now.

    Good Luck!

    I thought they used intel chips until 5 mins ago, but I wasn't 100% so went looking - the only info i've found so far is for one that uses an IBM chip! but i'll have a bit of a browse, you've got me wondering now!
