    Smile New PC

    Hi guys,
have been browsing the excellent forums for a while, but now need some advice!
I've got to build my sister a pc before she goes to uni.
She's got £280-£300 max to spend.
I've already got a spare case, floppy drive, monitor and graphics card, so she needs:
    CPU
    Motherboard
    RAM
Hard Drive (80gb or bigger preferably)
    DVD-RW (Dual layer)
Speakers (she would like 5.1 if possible)
    PSU
    IDE/floppy cables

what would you recommend-i thought sempron as could maybe upgrade in future, or should i go for athlonXP instead?

    Thanks
    Ed

She won't be going to Uni until September will she? I would wait for a bit if there's no hurry, Socket 939 Semprons will be out over the summer, and AMD are due a price cut in July. Also, if you have a graphics card already I assume it's AGP, which limits upgradeability a bit. You might find that some decent boards with the K8T890 chipset tip up soon with both AGP and PCI-E slots, they would be ideal from an upgrade point of view. I suppose if she's not interested in gaming it won't matter- in fact what will it be used for?

For that amount of money, even though it goes against everything in my head, wait until August and keep checking the hexus bargains section until a dell bargain computer comes up. Value for money?? unbeatable. You could even flog those extra bits you have on ebay and just add that to her total amount to spend. Will also give her 1 years warranty on every component.

    thanks for the replies

i think i'll wait and see until the 939 semprons appear-hadn't heard they were introducing them for socket 939, so that sounds good!

i'll also have a look for dell bargains if any come up

    cheers
