    ST20G5 PSU fan ?

I am thinking of getting the ST20G5 and an wondering if it has the jet engine 40mm fan like the older Shuttles had or if that has been replaced with something better.

From the pictures I have found it looks like there is a larger fan on the side of the powersupply which would be nice.

I noticed there is a 40mm on the chipset but it looks like Zalman sells a larger heatsink to eliminate the fan that fits in there.

The 20G5 uses a 60mm fan on the PSU and although the northbridge cooler can be replaced by a passive zalman, it's not recommended when overclocking or using integrated graphics.

I would not be over clocking for sure but I was planning on using a built in video for a little while at least. 60mm is better than a 40 at least.

    Thanks

Hi, Ive just got a SN45G V2 and have really quiet components in. The ICE fan half the time doesnt even spin. Basically all I can hear is the PSU whinning like a maniac. Can anyone tell me if this is normal. It really is spoiling my media pc. I have the 250W unit.

Maesager, you seem to think so. Is this the case?

    Is there any alternative?

What size is the fan in the PSU for that model. I have an SB51G and that had a 40mm PSU fan. I tried several to find a quiet one and I don't think one exists. With the ST20G5 at least it's a 60 so maybe I can find a quieter one.

On my SB51G I finally just threw out the shuttle PSU and use an external full size ATX one.

Im pretty sure ive got the 40mm fan. I think then that maybe all of the units are quite noisey then.

    Did your psu's whine?

I wonder if you could mod the psu by disabling the little fans and channeling the heat out with a big 80mm fan on the side.

Well it sounds like some of the newer ones have a 60 so that should be a little better. You could make a cone shaped adaptor to convert the 40mm hole to a larger one and have the fan stick out the back of the case.I know they make 40 to 60 but I couldn't find 40 to 80.

If you don't mind cutting a hole in the side of the case that would work too.

Its a bit of depressing situation really. Dont want to start doing mods really but it would be fun. I wouldnt fancy opening the psu up though to disable to fans. I wonder if the new 60mm psu as used in my gaming pc would fit in. Are these for sale?

I got the ST20G5 yesterday and it is pretty quiet expecially compared to how the SB51G started. It has a 60mm fan in the PSU so that isn't as loud. There is a 40mm on the northbridge but that one spins so slow it doesn't make much noise. The loudest fan is amazingly the 92mm main one but it isn't very loud during normal operation.

I don't know about quietest but the 250GB Maxtor one I just got is pretty quite. I can't hear it over the main cooling fan anyway.

You could check to see if your current one has some kind of quiet mode you can enable. My 120GB Maxtor had that and it made a big difference.
