Museum of the past:motherboard help needed

    Hi,

My children use old Mitsubishi CXs (pentium II) for gaming etc.

I've got two cheap 3D graphics cards spare and want to upgrade their machines but mobos don't currently have AGP slots.

Any advice on motherboard? Needs AGP plus hole for PII brick.

    Many thanks in anticipation.

    F.

when you say "two cheap 3D graphics cards spare", what exactly do you mean?

the rock-solid motherboard chipset of the day was the Intel 440BX, which took Slot 1 pentium 2's, and provided an AGP 1x/2x slot, running at 3.3V

however, modern graphics cards (even cheap ones) tend to run at 1.5V (from the AGP 4x/8X days).

wrong card in wrong slot, things'll go pop.

if the cards are definitely 3.3V, then track down a 440BX board & be happy

assuming you can find one cheap, anyway - you could alternatively get a socket a motherboard, 2200+ sempron, and some RAM, for about £55 new

Ugh - I was utterly unaware this voltage bu11$hit existed. Many thanks for the tip - as ever, very pleased I asked here first.

Getting an old mobo to run the slot 1 p2 400 and have a 5200 compatible AGP is gonna be tricky with no guarantees at the end of it.

Abandon thread. I will grab a different mobo/processor arrangement and take it out of the childrens' pocket money. (only kidding)

    cheers,
    F.
